| no partners | | I decided to head north on I-17 today and hike up to 2 more P1K peaks:
1) Black Mountain 6045
2) Squaw Peak 6525
A P1K peak is one with 1,000 feet or more of topographic prominence; there are 430 such peaks in Arizona.
Black Mountain 6545
I have counted 24 summits in Arizona named "Black Mesa", "Black Mountain", or "Black Peak". This one is between Sedona and Cottonwood, and is 4.0-4.5 miles SW of Robbers Roost and Casner Mountain.
This was a road walk up to the top of the mountain, then it was an easy off-trail stroll to the highpoint. I located a reference mark, which of course pointed me to the benchmark. There was a height of light and a summit register log at the benchmark. The register log was placed there in 2006, and I was the 4th person to sign it -- the last entry before mine was in 2015.
The summit is kinda flattish with lots of juniper trees, so there isn't much in the way of views. There are some nice views off to the north on the hike up though.
On the way back I wasn't paying attention to my route and I continued on FR 761A farther than I should have, so I had to go across some open country to get back to where I parked. I hate it when that happens!
Squaw Peak 6525
This Squaw Peak is not the same as the peak in Phoenix that now goes by the name of Piestewa Peak. This one is in the Verde Valley, off of the Highway 169 exit on I-17. There is a road that goes to the summit, and I drove most of the way before deciding to stop a little over 2 miles below the summit and walk the rest of the way. There is an antenna farm at the summit, but there are some decent views.
Synopsis
I enjoyed the hike up to Black Mountain more than the hike to Squaw Peak. The dirt road to Black Mountain was much better than the one to Squaw Peak, and the hike to Black Mountain was more enjoyable in general. I might hike Black Mountain again sometime, but probably not anytime soon. I really can't see hiking up to Squaw Peak again though.
Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes is below. Stats above are the sum of the two.
Black Mountain 6045: 9.04 miles with 1,783 feet of elevation gain
Squaw Peak 6525: 4.46 miles with 851 feet of elevation gain |
