Started to think about side attractions to liven things up initially thought about turning around at Carney but at about 3 miles spotted the mushroom rock below the southern cliff face and decided I wanted to tag it. Stepped over the barbed wire fence near an abandoned gate and picked a route with the least cholla and catclaw. Now it was stumbling and thrashing around as the strolling was over, about 2 miles and a mere 2.5 hours later I was back to the same place on the trail. Once you get closer you realize how large the mushroom rock is and also the huge surrounding boulders which obscured my vision of the shortest way to approach so it was in and out of the washes in this upper portion. Some small and large caves under the larger boulders , which I was hesitant to explore ceilings were low and would have required crawling , I was already moving slow some pottery fragments scattered around this area. Didn’t expect to be looking down on the summit of Turks Head but the mushroom base is about 3k feet. Wasn’t expecting quite the workout on getting to it as it looks so close from the trail Once back felt good to be strolling again on Lost Goldmine back to the trailhead, fortunately the clouds continued most of the afternoon keeping the temps pleasant. |
