| no partners | | Started hiking from the First Water Horse Lot , First Water Road is rutted and rocky but still easily passable for now, serious erosion at the 2 mile mark makes it a one lane road there. Encountered one other car in the lot suspect was car camping as they had a solar panel deployed outside the car. As usual when you expect to see wildlife you don’t as the usually resident deer of Hackberry Spring loop were no shows. Hackberry Spring had a stagnant pool with a slight trickle leaving the pipe. Heading up to Garden Valley had thought about going up to Hackberry Mesa which I’ve done from Second Water Trail but not from this side. I thought there was a use trail but was unable to locate it and decided the vegetation was more than I wanted to deal with today as I wanted to finish before the afternoon warm up. Decided to take a break on the knoll 2474 in Garden Valley to take a look around, reinspected the grinding holes there, also since the fire noticing the pottery sherds are more visible alongside the trail. Saw 3 other hikers pass by the knoll while I was there, ended up passing them by on the way to the trailhead .A few folks hanging around the First Water Trailhead, then when I was getting back to the horse lot I thought I heard Santa’s sleigh bells ringing but it was 2 mules and rider heading out that looked to be geared up for prospecting, I guess the search for gold continues. |
