| partners | | Hike w/ kiddos. Yup, it was time for the 4yo to conquer the Flatiron... she's been asking about it for months. Easy start after 7am, good morning views over the Supes, no need for headlamps and parking lot was only half-full. Quick climb to the draw and then, after confirming that all three kids were still hyped, we headed up. Lots of friendly people on trail, including a few rockstars that helped with that final climb. Cold on top and the hot coffee & cocoa was greatly appreciated by all.
Descent was harrowing from a parent's POV. We bypassed the climb to (climber's left) and, while it was easier, necessitated quite a bit of ferrying (more fellow hiker help, lots of friendly people). Rest of the drop was a mix of one-at-a-time navigation, butt-slides, lifts, and... carrot-and-stick. Middle child gets especially difficult when over-stimulated and was purposefully bullying the others and pushing rocks downhill whenever I looked away. Nothing dangerous, just testing limits. Returned to the draw and then we trotted the rest of the way.
Taking a single 6yo a few years ago seemed like a piece of cake compared to managing all three by myself. Physically this felt trivial, and the kids never seemed that tired, but stress levels were next-level. It was an amazing, ridiculous, stupid, impossible day, and something I would never recommend to any other parent ever. |
