Started on Dutchman a few minutes before sunrise and the little climb up those hills helped warm us up before dropping into a chilly Barkley Basin. Washes all running, kids needed help crossing the wider ones. Climb up to Miner's seemed to take forever with their short legs (and constant playing with ice), but there was a cool waterfall flowing in from the side and lots of trickles & shiny seeping rocks from the Needle to distract along the way. Cocoa & coffee past the saddle, then we started seeing more people on the trail, including a familiar face near Crystal Spring. Bluff Springs Trail was a fun one with numerous creek crossings, and by this time most of the ice had melted, so there were less slips to deal with. Took a late lunch break on the other side of Terrapin junction. There was only one truly icy-slick and dangerous section climbing out of Barks and then the long descent. Very long day for them, and all three did well, and I think a Weaver's Needle Loop may be a reasonable mid-spring trip. |
