Last weekend I went up to the "North of Montezuma" area find two petroglyph sites. I batted 0.500 and decided to go back this weekend to find the recalcitrant one. A little more background: I was inspired to look for this one by this [ youtube video ] . I've walked around the Sacred Mountain area before and thought I should find and check out this site and see if the "Bigfoot" was actually taken.

With a little extra prep I figured it wouldn't be hard to find and so I also sketched out a speculative loop hike to fill out the day. My wife decided to come along.

We walked a short distance from the parking spot to my first guess, but that was clearly wrong. In the end we wandered around for over two hours before Catherine beat me to them (yes it's always a race). I can report the Bigfoot was not stolen. We spent a good 30 min walking around looking for more glyphs in the vicinity but didn't find much - it's really a small site. Though looking at the video again this morning it appears we missed the biggest panel, sheesh, how does this always happen?

We still had more time and rather than walk the loop I drew in advance we decided to follow up on a tip we heard from some javelina pistoleros who we spoke to briefly at the start. They said they'd seen lots of petroglyphs on a hill "over there". Their pointing (and uncertainty if that was the hill) combined with my understanding what they were pointing at, made this far from a sure thing, but what the heck.

My best guess of the location actually took us to a trailhead and trail system I didn't know existed and it seems not to be mentioned elsewhere on HAZ. We walked the nice trail for half a mile or so before branching off to the top of pt3997. We hit a few other highpoints looping back but didn't see any cultural signs at all. Oh well, another reason to go back and look around.
