Turns out there's not much ancient there and it's popular with the shooting crowd. But interesting views - a heck of a lot of solar panels out there, though I'm pretty sure nuclear fans would love to compare the Palo Verde power output/footprint area ratio.
It was a short walk and I was near enough the "can't miss" Gila area that I drove over to walk a section I hadn't been to before. Well worth the walk because there were beaucoup petroglyphs.
This was interesting: as I turned the corner and saw the best rock art of the day I noticed the buzzing of a rattlesnake. I couldn't see it in the broken rock but the sound was coming from the direction of those glyphs which is exactly where I wanted to go and was my route to get back on top (otherwise I'd have to backtrack quite a distance). I poked around with my poles to get a better idea where he was located. He had quieted down so I advanced until he started again. Then "buzz"...yes right below the nice petroglyphs (and my feet). So I backed off, took pictures from further away, and never saw him.
Good way to spend a half a day without driving too far. |
