A little research said I should park at the Warford Ranch Volcano parking area. This name is apparently known to geologists but the volcano doesn't seem to be named on topo maps. Anyway the high point there is the source of the local basalt plain and it erupted about 3 million years ago.
It's always nice walking on the mainly flat flora-free ground but I found almost no ancient cultural signs. I walked along the Butterfield Stagecoach trail for a ways. It's certainly visible but hard to tell if it's been enhanced by later travelers through the years. I went up the volcano. I walked back to the car. Nice day fishing even if they weren't biting. |
