there's a box at the trailhead for a mandatory $2 per person. i paid, the couple just behind me didn't. they passed me at the pay station - maybe they've never seen it before and weren't prepared with their cash. as long as i could hear them talking, i got angry about this. so... i passed them and got them out of earshot and i could enjoy the hike again.

i read that the last mile of this hike is a real pumpkin. i expected a road, i didn't expect it to be paved - and it's really only the paved parts that are super steep. and yes, that's the better part of the last mile. i did better than i expected on that last mile though. there were two trail runners who could carry on a conversation while going up this section - i don't think they were going fast enough. i spent about 25 minutes at the top without any company. then there were close to a dozen when i went back down. i think i lost a pant size on this hike for as much as my glutes were feeling on the way up, and i had to talk my knees into the trek down. "you can do it, knees, only one more paved section to go..."
