Took my friend Corey up to the Wrightson summit on his first time to the Santa Ritas. It had rained and snowed the night before, and the cloud deck was about 8,000 feet, obscuring the peaks.

There was quite a bit of snow above Josephine Saddle, but little ice on the trail which was a relief. Bellows Spring was frozen at the pipe but you could hear a fair amount of trickling water up the drainage. Above Bellows the landscape was magical, with the trees festooned with ice and snow.

Upon reaching Baldy Saddle the air was thick with mist, and Baldy was completely obscured. We steadily climbed to the summit in cloud, but saw a faint patch of blue above. Sure enough the cloud tops were at 9,000 feet, leaving the summit above the clouds where it was sunny and warm. The view was amazing, a sea of clouds around the tiny island summit of Mount Wrightson!

After lunch on the summit and signing the register, we descended back through the fairyland of ice and mist, down to the car, having had what was easily one of the most beautiful experiences in either of our memories.

Wow.
