Got started a little after 0700 to pleasant temps and plenty of shade. Headed up Super Trail, which is my preferred route below Josephine Saddle. The extra 1.50 miles feels like nothing with the mostly good tread and mild incline.
After the saddle, we hopped onto Old Baldy and began the infinite switchbacks up to Baldy Saddle. I lagged behind the group, keeping my heart rate below explosive levels. There’s a surprising amount of vegetation crowding the trail in places, if this wasn’t a popular hike, it would get overgrown pretty quickly.
After a short break at the saddle, we headed up the final not-quite-a-mile to the summit, which is NOT at 10k’ as someone claimed. Zero other hikers, no bugs, great temps, and some shade while we had a snack at the summit.
After a nice break, he headed back downhill. The descent seemed a little rockier, but we quickly reached Josephine Saddle. From there, we stayed on Old Baldy down to the trailhead. That’s not my favorite section to descend (or ascend for that matter) since the footing generally sucks. Warmed up a bit on the final mile, but we all survived without too much complaining.
Traffic on I-10 both directions was light, no slowdowns. Perfect day for this hike, great trmps and no storm concerns. Good to see Joe, John, & Kelly again! |
