| no partners | | I accomplished 1.5 goals today. One was to car camp in a splendid isolated spot surrounded by tall buttes with rock windows and hundreds of saguaros'. Mission accomplished with some tough 4 wheeling at the very last; very glad I had curry sway bars installed on the Jeep. Found a mano within 50 feet of camp. This area has two very old fire rings and pretty much no traffic.
The next was a reconnaissance for a backpack I want to do when I get in better shape. It will require a small incursion onto the bombing range but I am not worried. I made a section of the hike and decided that carrying a heavier pack would be doable on part of the route. I went high for part to get views and that would not be suitable but part of my return was pretty mellow. I would be north of the goal but the last part of the route looked quite doable. Just south is a very pretty collection of buttes which according to the Desert Mountaineer have never been climbed that he knows of. I did a pretty hard hike a few years ago to the foot of the gorgeous area that had me back to camp in the dark. This is a different route, and I'll have to haul water in but then I can camp and photograph and scramble around at my leisure. I think I can get to some of the saddles between the spires but don't think I will be able to climb it. Don't care, my brief visit was the area looked overall awesome and some day I want to return. |
