Came down the rough Board Tree Saddle route to dark clouds and thunder. Scouted the road and elected to park up by the corral. One section of off camber dirt road to Ash Spring looked like it could be a problem if wet. Wouldn't hurt me to walk. Car camped to off and on rain for about 30 minutes. Did some road repair while I was there. This road will take you to Young if you have HC, 4wd, time and extra provisions.
Next day I put the pack on and walked. By the cow pasture were great views of the cliffs above Cherry creek. At Ash Spring the tank was full as I would have expected. The road had a few issues thru here but was pretty much as I remembered. The canyon is not remarkable but pretty easy if you are tolerant of rock hopping. A pretty good flow down it, some dry areas but the water resurfaces here and there. The little canyon changes from areas of nice walking on cow, elk and bear trails on benches to shallow narrow sections with small pools. One nice white ledge with a little waterfall. On down bigger walls near to Cherry Creek. One pourover with an animal walkabout on the left LDC.
Cherry Creek here is huge and no water or underground. I was below Pendleton Mesa, an area I am familiar with ( terrible road out onto the Mesa). Anyway a short walk down canyon and water reappears and some big nice trees. An amazing spring just pumping out water; not on my TOPO map. At this point a pretty good flow develops and you can forget keeping feet dry as you cross side to side when your bench runs out or is covered in flood debris.
When I reached Horse Tank I dropped my pack and went up a short way. Seeing this was not going to be a casual stroll, and it was starting to rain, I went back to a lovely campsite. Well protected and suited my feng shui for the area. The rain stopped and I just walked around with the camera and sat on a rock and read some.
Next day took a daypack up Horse Tank. The theme was one boulder choke after another. Non technical but some scrambling required. The canyon was nice with huge trees and some nice walls. No running water but a few pools. I was hoping for some nice slick rock to walk, from my views from Pendleton Mesa it seemed like it might be the case for part of it. I got tired of all the work and stopped I think where according to my map it bends easterly. I will have to tackle the rest of it from another direction.
It was fun sliding down some boulder faces. I packed up camp and walked out to gloomy clouds and distant thunder. I got up to Board Tree Saddle then car camped in the area of the Little Grand Canyon out of Globe, the temps tolerable with all the cloud cover and wind. Great views and sunset.
Nice to be back in this area again. Next time I will bring my Jeep vs Toyota. |
