We pulled off the road almost directly after purchasing our pass at the Ranger Station kiosk. The poppies on the far hillsides to the north and east were amazing. I shot a couple panos here and a movie of a Phainopepla.
Our next stop was one I think we had stopped at before on one of our previous trips. Along the east side of the road I was able to shoot the poppies in the sky photo that I like and some slow motion movie of the poppies blowing in the wind. Down from there Ambika spotted the largest Chia patch either of us had ever seen. My photos of it didn't turn out that well which is too bad; however, the way it was on the hillside didn't help nor did the light. Further down the road we stopped at another place to walk back and get some photos of poppy filled hillsides. It was a little tricky navigating this. I did put together another pano.
Now on Bartlett Lake Road we found a place to park and walked up the road about 1/2 mile to take our photos. You can see where they had been pushing around dirt/sand off of the road and piled it up in various places. We were hoping to find white and/or pink poppies. Yes on the white, kind of on the pink. However, we saw lots of Chia, the biggest/tallest Chia I've ever seen; it was stunning. There were the usual suspects as well with the poppies and tall/thick lupine. We even saw a few of those pretty little Creamcups.
There were quite a few others out too but it was reasonable and not a horde. Some of the areas that we've shot wildflowers before didn't have much. We made the most of what was out there. The lake is that muddy color and full; no shoreline that I could see. We drove to the SB Cove and then over to the Marina to get some lunch. The lunch wait for food was an hour so I opted for a beer and we sat there looking over to SB and Saddle Mountain as the clouds were dancing around creating a great change of light.
I videoed some of the drive out. We didn't stop. Here is the video for the day: [ youtube video ] |

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
