Written 6-7-2023. We didn't want to be left out of the superbloom around Bush Highway so we met up in Mesa and headed up the road. There were cars scattered everywhere and it was an overcast day so the poppies had the day off. Nonetheless, with the superbloom status, there were so many poppies, the color display was still incredible so we parked and headed up the hill.

The girls pulled out their big guns but my gun has been retired; well actually, I gave it to my brother and he was thrilled to get it. We more or less went in various directions. The flat sky was a bit discouraging but maybe it helped with the most important colors: POPPIES. I tried to incorporate them with my view east to the Four Peaks, southwest to Stewart Mountain and south to the Supersitions. As I continued walking up the hill I spotted it, another color and it was bright and getting more plentiful the higher I got: Owl Clover.

Across the highway a bushy tree of some sort (get it, Bushy  on the Bush Hiway), was creating an arch and it attracted my attention. I had to zoom to get the shots I wanted with the poppies all around it. I started heading back down hill and to the north when I spotted the famous Salt River horses. I was able to zoom and get some photos but really none with the true star of this show, fluted poppies.

We headed over to Saguaro Lake for lunch, hoping the sun would decide to come out. It's hard to believe it's been 33 years since I last water-skiied on this lake... in fact, that might have been the last time I did water ski :o . The restaurant was quite crowded but we eventually found the area at the back of the restaurant where you could get service at a window. We ended up having a pretty good lunch.

We decided we would go down E Butcher Jones Beach Rd to check things out and pulled over at the Butcher Jones OHV area. We walked around in here for awhile as you could cover a lot of ground. The main star again was the poppies but there was some nice lupine and some scattered cactus. The poppies had opened as the sun was thinking maybe it should shine a little for us. The long view was west toward Stewart Mountain. It was while shooting in this area that I felt it, a bite on my lower leg. It just seemed annoying more than anything. However, the invisible bite did get quite red and swelled a little and lasted a week.

We went back out on the highway and did end up stopping to take some photographs of the horses and poppies. I got some pretty good movies too. Overall we had a nice day but it would have been better with a little sunshine to open up those poppies in the morning. The wind was blowing throughout too so it was actually a bit nippy. However, it provided a few opportunities to get some slo-mo movies of the flowing flowers.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
