I had not hiked in Flagstaff in 7 months, so I decided to escape the heat of the Valley and head up to Flag.

We started the hike about 7:45 from the Kendrick Mountain TH, and went up to Kendrick first. Kendrick Peak Trail #22 is nice and easy to hike on, although there is a small amount of deadfall to contend with. It was sunny and a bit breezy, which made for a nice hike.

There was a little bit of snow at the cabin, and from the cabin to the summit there were some patches of snow on the trail; but it was easy enough to just walk around the snowy sections. There were the usual nice views at the summit, and we hung around up there for a while.

While hiking on the trail we encountered 15 other hikers, most of them on our way back down. There were more hikers than I would have thought for a weekday, and I imagine that there will be many more hikers on the trail on a weekend.

After getting back to the TH and taking a quick break, we made our way up to Newman Hill. We walked about 1/2 mile on FR 90, and then went off-trail up to Newman. The terrain was good to hike on, and there was no vegetation to deal with, so it wasn't much of a bushwhack. However, it was a very steep climb, especially in full sun. We both thought that the hike up to Newman was tougher than hiking up to Kendrick. The descent down from Newman was a piece of cake, although without poles I am not sure that I would say that. There are no trees at the Newman summit, so you have unobstructed views. I thought that the view of Humphreys from Newman is better than the view of Humphreys from Kendrick.
