A good number of people were already there when I arrived about 645am. With a few exceptions, all of those hikers went up the Hieroglyphics Trail. I hung a right and started down the Lost Goldmine. I really like this trail. It's mostly flat and doesn't offer many challenges, but the scenery is hard to beat. The mountain looks so different as you move along the edge.
I made good time to the turn off towards the Turks Head trail. It's just the old road than you follow up. The trail is easy to follow these days going up. I remember the first couple times on this one, it was a route finding challenge. Lots of cliffing out the first time hiking up there. Now, the trail is worn pretty clear and the slickrock sections have decent cairns in place all the way to the top.
The weather was nice at the start, a nice but short-lived coolness at the start. The shade of the mountain made the hike up much nicer than getting baked by the sun going up. Hiking back, the heat of the day was getting to the "man, it's hot!" range.
The views from Turks Head is the draw. And, the interesting formations along the way up. The balanced rock near the bottom of the peak is always a stop I make. And, the window/arch at the very top is also a cool geological experience.
I will be happy when the weather turns and I would also love to see some RAIN out here. |
