| partners | | Jason wanted to get in a hike on Christmas Eve and we decided to head out to Haunted Canyon. We were kinda/sorta hoping for some lingering falls colors, but we missed that by 3-4 weeks. Still lots of color in the canyon, but mostly on the canyon floor.
The road in was in good shape. The hike up to the fence was as expected, but we saw so many critter tracks along the muddy road. Dogs or coyotes, some deer and lots of little cat paws from Bobcats most likely. Bobcat Blvd, Coyote Parkway, Mountain Lion Lane, Bear Blvd?
The hike up and over the hump was steeper than we both remembered. Funny how your mind filters out the bad bits of a hike. It's a pretty easy ascent and descent, either way. The trail was covered with leaves for most of the hike, but it was still mostly easy to follow. The giant cairns at water crossing and an occasion red arrow painted on rocks. I hate that crap. Don't paint arrows in places that are easy to follow, or anywhere, for that matter!!!
There was no running water in the canyon, a few trickles from larger pools. It was muddy and wet in some areas. The sycamore trees still had a few stragglers, but most of them were bare. The signs of recent water running was evident in some places. I have yet to hike in here with running water. Jason told me it's not as "fun" as I would expect if it is running. He's been in here with lots of running water. Oh well, my next trip in here will be to see water and then the leaves changing. Next year, I guess.
We made decent time to the cabin and had a break. We came across a camp with a campfire smoldering before the spring, but nobody was "home". As we approached the cabin, a bow hunter emerged from the brush and said that was his camp. He had be tracking some bucks near the cabin. On the way back, we came across him again at his camp. He said he had been out for the past 4 days. That's crazy!
The cabin is looking a little worse for wear. The walls are leaning more than I remember and the ceiling is disappearing as well. I think this place will need some restoration or shoring up or it will be the "former location" of Toney Ranch Cabin with a pile of logs were the cabin used to be.
We made good time on the way back. Jason heard something "large" rustling in the brush and for while, I thought we might see a bear or a large deer. But, alas, whatever it was, disappeared into the forest.
We made back right at sunset and drove back to civilization. Thanks for the invite, Jason. It was a good day in the eastern Supes for sure!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone at HAZ!!! |
