| partners | | After hiking nearly 30 miles and 6000' the previous 2 days, waking up early for the 3rd day in a row to do this hike was not easy. After some caffeine, a hot breakfast and some vitamin IB, all was good. After what we just did, 6 miles and 1500' would be easy.
The main thing to report on this trail is that, yes, it has been cleared. There was exactly one dead tree across the trail, near the top. I would think this is a very recent fall. Thank you very much to whoever did this maintenance. I had enough of crawling over deadfall the previous 2 days that this work is very much appreciated.
We got an early start just after 6am and the first mile was almost all in the shade. The grade is pretty even, steep in only a few spots. There is some loose rock, but I noticed mostly on the way down.
Wally kicked out a few elk at the top of Profanity Ridge. No photo ops were available. The views in the bowl going up to Profanity Ridge are the best on this hike. It was very peaceful and scenic and a nice break to be on a cleared trail.
On the way up we talked to 3 overnight backpackers whose car we saw at the TH. They pointed out where they camped and it seemed kind of exposed to lightning, which was nearby the night before.
The views all along the trail are magnificent. Very glad to have done this hike and saved it for last on this weekend. Also very glad to have avoided rain for all 3 days.
Saw one more lone hiker on the way down and talked with him for a few minutes, as he was also originally from PA. Finished up before 10am and headed up to Flagstaff for a water reuse symposium for work. Wally headed back to Phoenix (Mesa) in his vehicle.
