| no partners | | Hit the TH around 7:30 am with the original goal of doing Arnett Canyon. Of the two approaches, I prefer the southernmost one. For the first couple of miles, the attraction is the rock formations, as well as views of Picketpost from the north side. About 1.6 miles in, the "pretty section" begins, with trees and flowing water (likely just from the recent rains). There is some fall color, but still a lot of green. This might be a great Christmas hike ....
At the end of Arnett, I decided to continue on and do the Picketpost circumference loop. I saw no one until halfway through Telegraph Canyon, when I came across a solo trail runner, and then began running into a few groups going doing the circumference loop CCW.
The trail through Telegraph Canyon was a little hit and miss, but no worry about getting lost. There is a section of the HAZ route through this section that juts south out of the creekbed before circling back down. I saw no real sign of a taking that jog and just stayed more or less in the creekbed.
Eventually the trail/route connects with a 4x4 road, which the trail follows before peeling off on a trail that connects to the AZ Trail.
When I got to the turnoff for the summit trail, I decided to tack that on as well. Several groups on the trail, but not very many on the summit when I arrived. Temperatures were perfect and visibility was excellent.
After the descent, I circled one more time down the south approach to Arnett, so that I could check out the north approach on the return.
Great day for a hike. |
