I parked near where FR42 starts off of Horseshoe Dam road. Fortunately, the map on my GPSr showed where that was, otherwise I'm not sure if I would have found it. There had been some vehicles going up it, but there is a locked gate not too far up the road. Before the gate, there was a kiosk with a sign showing the project was started in 2013 and scheduled to be finished in 2014. I think it's been shelved. There were some signs saying the area is closed from December to June for breeding. I guess the eagles won out. There were reasonably fresh OHV tracks all along the jeep roads, so I'm not sure who is out there or how they are getting in. I know didn't see a soul after getting on FR42.
The route is well marked, there are plenty of signs so it would be very difficult to lose your way. A lot of it is walking up or down washes where the grade is never steep and the tread is decomposed granite, not too soft. Fairly easy walking. The parts that were road, rocky and steep in places, but nothing overly difficult.
I enjoyed it. It was a nice quiet hike with great views throughout. |
