Loop hike to check out the upper portion of Devil's Canyon from the Oak Flat Campground.

FR 2438 and down the Devil's Canyon Access Trail Temps were cool to start so the road walk was very enjoyable. The Access Trail into the canyon appears to not see regular use but easy enough to make your way down to the canyon floor. At this point the canyon is fairly wide open.

Upper Devil's Canyon After a few hundred yards of an open canyon things changed. Thick vegetation, wall to wall pools to work around, fallen trees, thick catsclaw and every other pointy plant you can think of, did I mention thick vegetation, so the going was slow. Ryan rolled his ankle about half way through but after a short break felt he was OK to push on. Scenery was really good which helped accept the not so great hiking conditions.

Rancho Rio Creek I had two exit waypoints loaded in RS, a trail that topped out at the Lower Devil's Canyon Trailhead, and Hackberry Creek. When RS announced 500 feet to the Rancho Rio Exit we decided to make our exit via a trail, considering Ryan's sore ankle and that we still had 4 or so miles of jeep roads to hike. There was a small rock stack that marked the start of the trail up and out of the canyon. The trail was slightly overgrown but considering what we had just pushed through it seemed like a super highway. Had lunch under a tree upon reaching the top.

Jeep Trails back to the Campground Thought this part might be a little boring but the walk went by very quickly and the views were pretty nice along the way. Took short breaks when some shade was found since the temps were starting to rise. Stashed ice water at the car was very enjoyable.

One of the tougher hikes we have done. Ryan says "one and done", I could probably talk myself into going back :)
