Brian and I made the summit, and exactly 1 year ago to the date, Preston once again joined us for the lower part and turned back after a few hours while we pressed on for the summit. This wasn't even planned, it just worked out that way. Unlike after reaching Montrose Saddle last year, this year we succeeded.
There is an enormous amount of flowing water in Ventana Canyon, probably the most I have ever seen. Lots of water falls, cascades, flowing side canyons, and big pools. Snow was limited to the most upper parts on north aspects. We did encounter some snow in the last 50 feet which was a little bit of a problem, but I used my ice axe to scrape it off the rocks. This was then able to melt with the sun, and dry off for the climb down. The snow is melting, but there will soon be more.
There were 3 Javelina in the desert as we neared the trailhead. I guess they waited for everyone to leave.
Ventana and Esperero trails are now in excellent shape, worked well as promised.
Great day out with perfect sunny clear skies, warm temperatures, calm winds, and good air quality. |
