Research yielded a leg of a stage route started in the late 1870's concluding in the early 1900's. Today it is still partly driven by ATV's and the bored lonesome Jeeper in search of body damage.
I car camped above the wash entrance to a break in the rain/sleet/snow mix and wandered a bit enjoying the solutioned limestone and big views.
The next morning up the wash. My understanding is quite a bit of the road is original to the stage route. Apparently it was rough and in need of constant repair in the day; the stage evolved to a lighter covered stagewagon and they even ran a buckboard route for a while. Eventually vehicles made the trip too. Several robberies occurred during the runs. I saw bits of metal, quite a few partially hidden rock walls or road build up, a large heavy partial horseshoe for a large mule or a draft style horse. Very beautiful with all the green and interesting geology. Some places it was easy wash walking, the old road probably washed out. At times the way was clear, other times overgrown. Interesting bypass at a spring area. Old mining remains, one pretty extensive debris.
I turned back short of a private property high ranch area. The scrambling up to the mining areas wore me out. This is a keeper, and one I hope to return too especially with the flower bloom coming. |
