| no partners | | Google earth and the topo maps give some idea; nothing beats boots on the ground. I had permission from 2 tribal members but not the third. Two outa three ain't bad. I parked the Jeep in a good spot and placed the camo netting.
The early part of this trek I was familiar with. Soon tho I was in the large area of the map, and it was beautiful with running water and lots of bedrock. Part of the volcanic rock was very dark, gothic. Some areas had big pools and you could forget feet dry. Lots of rock hopping, for me the cattle trails I found were much appreciated. I decided to set up the stealth bivy on a knoll in some greasewoods and palo verde. The area seemed to be a barrel cactus nursery, naturally. The area was super green and lots of flowers, mostly fiddleneck. Poppies were seen on some steep hillsides. I got camp together, read, and wandered around enjoying the late light.
Supposed to rain. Nothing that night and a little the next day. I decided to check out some side canyons.
Next day I went on and was impressed with large limestone bedding planes. The canyon made a hard right and started to tighten up. I had to wade a pool and into the narrows I went. I was glad to be carrying a daypack. The walls went up and soon there were house sized boulders in the watercourse. Small pleasant waterfalls. A couple of swimming pools. I was able to get around all of it. I turned back, satisfied that no way I would bring a backpack thru this without much planning and a lot more time.
Heading back the dark clouds built. I got to camp in time to button up for thunder, lightning and bouts of heavy rain. A pause and a weak rainbow. Then on again.
Next day up and out. The Jeep where I left it. Thanks to those who made this possible. |
