| no partners | | Tried to get to Peak 8056. No info on this peak anywhere. The first mile involved some roads, the Meadow trail, and then an open Country hike down the STEEP ridgeline leading to Peak 8056. The brush wasn't too bad for the first mile, mainly ferns, some aspens and it was possible to go around any thorn bushes or larger obstacles. After the first mile, there were about 3 large brushy areas of New Mexico locust. I had cutters with me and spent hours cutting a trail through the brushy section, which is why my elapsed time is 5 hours longer than my moving time. Not only was the brush incredibly thick but the slope was more than a 45 degree angle in many areas which made it slow going. You don't want to take a fall in a forest of NM locust!!!
It seemed impossible to go around these brushy areas because the ridgeline was very narrow and the brush covered the entire ridgeline. When I finally got down to around 8,300 feet elevation, the brush got incredibly thick and I didn't find any easy way to get through. In this area, the brush was made up of New Mexico locust, gamble oak, etc. I spent a lot of time cutting NM Locust branches. It was already getting late so I stopped to take a quick lunch break. When I got down to about 8,160 feet elevation, the brush got even thicker and it seemed nearly impossible to get down to the saddle. From the saddle, it appeared that there wasn't too much brush getting to the summit. But, I got within about 0.15 miles (750 feet) from the summit but decided it simply was not worth going any further. You have to be a bit crazy to go through some of this brush. Some chain saws would be helpful!!! This bottom section may have been the ugliest bushwhack I've ever done, and that includes Samaniego peak, and a few others.
