Note: This hike is on the San Xavier reservation. I don't know if a permit is required or not. I didn't bother to research it. I just did this short hike whether it's allowed or not.

My original plan was to hike the Las Guijas Mountains High Point, Arizona. Unfortunately, the road was absolute CRAP and YES it does require 4x4 in my opinion. The relatively NEW tires on my RWD were spinning in one section. That means get the hell out of there and don't come back until I have 4x4. See my trip report on that one about the crappy road....

It was already getting late and I needed something I could hike quick before dark. I searched the map and this hill was along my ride home so I decided to try it. I've driven by this hill hundreds of time but never hiked it. So, today I decided to try.

I walked Northwest in the direction of the summit, and then North. There were a lot of lava rocks in this area so I needed to take careful steps. I hiked toward a white water tank. When I got there I found an old road going up the hill higher to a taller tank. This taller tank had a fence around it. Soon thereafter the road ended and I needed to climb up through a few lava rock areas. I kept going and eventually made it to a flat area. Then, I realized the true peak was further to the West, so I needed to walk along a relatively flat area. I found a US survey marker labeled PA2 with dates of 1959 and 1973. Not far from the summit, I found a C-shaped rock enclosure with a lot of glass bottles and burned out candles nearby. There must have been 30 or 40 glasses, mostly unbroken.

On the way down, only 5-10 minutes from the summit, I found a rock with the name Carlos with a year of 1935! I kept going down zig-zagging through the lava rocks and made it back down to the water tanks. I followed the road down hill this time and noticed that it ended at a gate. There was also a rock wall enclosing several buildings. So, I turned right and continued across a few more lava rock field to get down to where I parked.

Stats:
------
Distance (round trip) = 1.61 miles
AEG = 296 feet
Strava moving time = 1 hr 46 mins
Strava elapsed time = 2 hrs 8 mins

Note: A high clearance vehicle is required for the final 500 feet of the drive. If you only have a low clearance passenger car, you should be able to find somewhere else to park in the area, perhaps on the shoulder of the paved road somewhere.

Directions: From Tucson, take I-19 South toward Green Valley. Take exit 92 for San Xavier Rd. Turn left on W San Xavier Rd and continue for 0.8 miles. Turn right on SJ Stock Rd. Continue for 0.5 miles and turn left at a dirt road. Continue for another 500 feet and park somewhere off the road.

Good place to park: 32.104394, -110.981092
