| no partners | | The day after hiking Mt Marcy my feet were a bit sore but I felt like I had enough energy to hike Mt Jo, which was much easier.
I parked for free on Adirondak Loj road just North of Meadows Lane and walking South for about 1.2 miles to get to Adirondak Loj (often shortened to ADK LOJ).
I walked to Adirondak Loj and saw it for the first time. My Dad told me that his Aunt and Uncle, Joe Trepasso and Myrtle (Arthur) Trapasso, used to be caretakers at the ADK LOJ in the 1960's. I found a historic timeline at the ADK LOJ that said they became caretakers in 1946, almost 80 years ago! It was nice to see this place and I took a lot of photos. The staff was nice enough to let me walk around and take photos of the inside. After that, I went out to Heart Lake and took some photos there. Mt Joe is just to the North of the lake. There was a trailhead close to the lake that went off in that direction. I found a trail map sign which made it fairly clear. There was a short trail that was steeper which went up to Mt Jo. Then, there was a longer trail that was not as steep coming down. So, it was possible to do a loop hike. My only complaint was the sign did not list any mileages for the trails.
I figured out later that the round trip distance was a little over 3 miles from Heart Lake to the Mt Jo summit taking the short trail up and the long trail down. The trail was maintained very well. Near the top there another high point to the West which was a false summit. I went up there anyway to explore. At the actual peak, there were a few people and one of the groups had a small brown poodle walking around. It was funny to see the dog interact with a small chipmunk.
I took some photos and a video at the top then took the long trail down. At the bottom, I took a trail going East back to the main road and walked back to where I parked. Overall it was a great hike and there was a lot of shade along the way. At the summit, it was possible to see the lake and Mt Marcy in the distance. I found a use trail near the peak that went out to a lookout with unobstructed views of Heart Lake. The trees were near max foliage down below. I saw many colors - all different shades of greens, yellows, oranges, reds, etc.
It's a great hike for anyone in the area that does not want to do something as long as Mt Marcy.
Next year, I would be interested in any of the following. Each of these hikes could easily be done on a single day with time to spare.
Algonquin and Wright - 8.5 mi RT, 3656 AEG, start at ADK LOJ
Giant - 6 mi RT, 3050 AEG, about 10 miles East of ADK LOJ
Cascade and Porter - 5.6 mi RT, 2336 AEG, trailhead is 3 miles East of ADK LOJ road
Whiteface Mtn - 9.7 mi RT, 3700 AEG, trailhead is 12 miles NE of Lake Placid
Stats:
---------
Distance (round trip) = 5.62 miles
AEG = 1033 feet
Strava moving time = 2 hrs 27 mins
Strava elapsed time = 3 hrs 45 mins |
