The moon and 2 or 3 planets were lined up enticingly above the Bursera ridge line. I was surprised at the vibrancy of the planets/stars. This was despite the full moon and the brief annoyance of the fire house spot light which is under construction. (The entire Bursera slope is illuminated by the construction’s work lights. I feel sorry for the homes adjacent to the site). The hike up the Ruins trail was done in darkness with some assistance from my Garmin screen. This is always a rough ascent, day or night, but there is definitely a different feel to it hiking it in the darkness. I stopped briefly at the ruins with the hope of capturing my companion (Hulk) grimacing on the fireplace wall, only to discover that I had inadvertently left in the car. . (Not sure how the picture would have turned out anyway).
I took the National over to Goat Hill and got to the top just before sunrise. The moon was still looming fairly high in the western sky. This would have been the perfect hike if I had done it one day earlier (moon set would have been closer to 7:30). I hiked over to the Gila/Pyramid Trail and took that back to the TH. The trails were incredibly quiet today. Only saw 5 users and three of them were within .5 miles of the TH. No wildlife. Great weather. It was a little cold, but not too bad, until the wind picked up along the ridge. |
