Pretty much as the sun came up. parked at the Slate TH and took that west. The Slate Trail is one of my favorite trails in the park. I love the rocky swirls that make up the mid section of the trail. The rocks have been worn down quite a bit from use, but you can still the patterns. I noted from the official gps route that this trail extends past the Cave Creek Wash into the neighborhood. I followed this route a couple of times over the years, but for me the Slate ends at the P. A. Seitts Military Trail. I took the Seitts Trail north to where it connects to the Flat Rock Trail. The Seitts is a nice trail and makes for a good loop. It starts out nice and flat, paralleling Cave Creek, before turning into the hills and doing some minor climbing. When you hit the Flat Rock Trail you are entering back into the park. (Approximately 1.5 miles on the Slate Trail you actually exit Cave Creek Preserve, so the Seitts Trail is completely outside of the preserve). The Flat Rock is a short trail and continues the climb started on the Seitts. The Flat Rock connects to the Quartz Trail and this is where the length of the loop can be extended or shortened. My preferred loop (as me taking the Quartz to the Go John and then taking the Go John back towards the TH.
Very enjoyable morning in the preserve. Temps were great. Wildlife was rabbits and quail. Trails weren’t too busy: couple of bikers, a runner and a couple of hikers. Long drive, but worth it. |
