| partners | | I told Wally I would meet him at First Water TH. When I left 10 min earlier than I expected, I texted him and told him I would start without him if I got there first. At the end of Brown/Lost Dutchman Road before 88, I saw him speeding by on 88. I figured I might catch him on First Water Road, but he was even faster there. Looks like he can drive fast when he wants to .
did the loop counter clockwise heading out on Second Water Trail first. I kicked out a javelina on the descent into Boulder Canyon. It was a little startling as it remained still until I was about 6 feet away and then it bolted across the trail right in front of me. It made it up the the hill in what looked effortless, across all the loose volcanic rock.
Wally pointed out some interesting spots he knew about on the way down to Boulder Canyon, which was cool to learn about. Boulder Canyon was nothing major and then we headed up Calvary Trail. On the east side Wally pointed out where he discovered ruins on previous expeditions, and I got zoomed in pics the best I could.
On the LDT to Bull Pass we saw 2 deer, I got a few nice shots. Bull Pass was a bit of a slog and then downhill wasn't worse, but was slower with steep grades and loose rock.
Finished in 7.5 hours, with no lunch break. I didn't feel too beat but navigating over the rocky trails on the last mile was a bit more of an effort than usual. Saw 5 hikers total all day. It was little warm at the end but still not too hot to make this harder than it would normally be. |
