| no partners | | Early morning hike in the Sonoran McDowell Preserve. Did a loop targeting the last trail (in HAZ) that I needed to do to complete the set, the Desperado Trail. Started from the Granite Mtn TH around 5am and did a loop starting with 136 St Express. This is a curvy trail that heads north. I took this out for 2.27 miles and that brought me the Renegade Trail. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on the Renegade. Really enjoyed the section I was on. Some minor elevation, great twists and turns and beautiful views-near and far. Arrived at the Desperado Trail at 3.61. Took the Desperado back toward the TH. This trail ended fairly quickly (4.14) when it junctured with the Coyote Canyon Trail. There was a crested saguaro at that juncture.  From here I took Coyote Canyon to the Granite Mountain Loop and took that back towards the TH.
Weather was fantastic this morning. Cloudy with a nice breeze. Looked to be very dark towards the Walking Jim Trail. I got a few spits, a flash of lightning and a hint of a rainbow, but nothing too exciting. Encountered 9 bikers and 2 hikers. Wildlife limited to a few rabbits. Bikers said he saw a baby rattler up on the trail, but I didn’t see anything when I walked by the area. I love this area and I know there are more trails in this system so I’ll definitely be coming back. |
