There is a nice pull off spot on the west of the road near the canal. I had to hike back to the landfill to pick up where I left off and then continue east to get to the dam. Not much to say about the trail or views. The trail was basically a wide dirt road. The views were ok. Mainly the backside of Usery and the Hawes Trail System. Red Mountain was also there, but it didn’t seem to “pop” like it usually does. Got to the dam and turned around. Interesting to note that this canal trail is also part of the Maricopa Trail and the Sun Circle Trail. There was signage for both trails during the entire stretch. About .3 miles before the gated dam the Maricopa and Sun Circle turn off and cross a wash. Those trails will be for another day. Definitely a bikers trail. No hikers, but 15 bikers. Wildlife was pretty nice: coyote, quail, rabbits, vultures, roadrunner and couple of (I’m guessing) free range horses. |
