janie dropped us off at kingsbury grade around 0830
the trail goes mostly south through pine forest, heavenly ski resort and along the carson range ridgeline
good views and drop offs on both sides, although at some point lake tahoe is no longer visible
narrower trail but still good footing
quite a bit of uphill to star lake which was our original goal for the day, at least to filter water
we caught a couple of thru-hikers along the way, both of them stopping at star lake
crossed paths with another couple who shared current water reports for further along
we took a break at star lake, then discussed options
decided to continue five miles to armstrong pass, which involved an ascent to the freel peak turnoff, then to a series of streams crossing the trail with good water
another mile and a half to the pass, carrying four liters for a dry camp (needed three)
windy, but we found a sheltered spot to set up camp and cook dinner
getting to armstrong pass set us up for just nine miles to hike out in the morning, mostly downhill
janie picked us up at big meadow
this might have been laundry day, then another nice evening at fallen leaf campground |
