got going around 0830
steady uphill and onto a ridge overlooking fallen leaf lake
through the woods to floating island lake and cathedral lake
believe i hiked part of this trail in 2007, turning around above cathedral lake
the trail turns to the west and goes up a steep talus field for about a mile and a half
we reached a saddle with views to the west, still a mile and 1000 feet to go
the grade moderates a bit until the final summit push
great views of lake tahoe, fallen leaf lake and the surrounding mountains and lakes
we spent a few minutes up top, then made our way back down
john spotted a grouse near the saddle
saw quite a few people on the trail and at the summit, including some heading up into sketchy weather
a worthy peak - wasn't easy
i was pretty slow descending the talus field
so much more to do in the desolation wilderness
a return visit is in order |
