| partners | | Got started a little before 0730. I always lose the beginning of the trail on this hike. Did it again today. We made our way towards where the trail turns back to the right and more steeply uphill. Once back on track we headed uphill on the rocky trail. Looked around Fragile Arch, then headed up to the saddle. Faint route in a couple of places, but not a big deal.
After the saddle, we dropped slightly and headed to the drainage, then uphill again. That route was slightly less defined than last time. All the recent rain has vegetation growing everywhere. Finally had to put on sunblock at the top of the ridge, with our first sunlight of the day.
We enjoyed the views as we worked our way south along the ridge. One dip, then the final ascent up to Geronimo Head. We looked around for a few minutes, then headed north. The offtrail was easy, with most of the rock being blocky and staircase-like. Over another small “peak” then we turned west to descend off the ridge. No defined route—just avoided the worst of the brush as we aimed for the drainage. Steep descent. Some catclaw, and some water to work our way around as we got lower. More vegetation than I had seen before.
Once in the main drainage, the vegetation cleared up as we rockhopped around the water. Fun, and not difficult. We reconnected with the trail and headed back to the saddle and down. Staying on the main route was mostly easier. Some loose rock in the steepest parts, but I don’t think it warrants bringing a pole to use it on only half a mile of a six mile hike.
Didn’t see any other hikers until we were almost finished, then saw two sitting on some rocks. The parking lot was packed when we got back to it. Tourists. Fun day. Great weather. Just enough offtrail to keep it interesting, but not frustrating. Thanks, Kelly, for joining me on this one! |
