This was a narrow loop, heading out on the Willow Springs Canyon East Trail, then heading further north up towards where we hiked last week, near 2881. There's a trail up along a ridge above the canyon that Bagley Tank is in. At the north end of that canyon, the trail continues further north to Bagley Flat, but there's also a trail that heads down to Bagley Tank, which is the way we took. From there we took FR12 to Willow Springs canyon upper and headed back to the TH.
Saw a helicopter flying kind of low on our way down to Bagley Tank. In the wash we saw a few 4WDs. One was an old Datsun that was in the wash, and then further up we saw some heavy duty 4WDs parked before the gnarly section of the wash, the drivers had decided to hike further in from there rather than take the road that bypasses that by heading to the high ground.
Saw one small nighthawk sitting on the trail in the dark and then nothing. Cool to start, but not chilly. Very windy, especially up on the ridge and at the saddles. The first 4 miles was in the shade, no direct sunlight on us at all. The last 4 miles was all sun. FR12 from Bagley Tank to the wash is a slog, longer than I remembered and very rocky. |
