| no partners | | Midday hike at SoMo. Decided to do a portion of the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter. Had to try to psyche myself up for it. Not a trail that I really enjoy. But it is fairly close to home and I hadn’t done it in a while. Got to the 19th Ave TH around 10:30am. Started with Hau’Pal. Made good time to Star Peak and then on my way to the Alta Trail. Really enjoy the Alta. Solitude, nice views and a good variation on elevation. It had been a while so I stopped by Maricopa Peak along the way. Took my way down to the National and then it was decision time….to head south on the National to the beginning of the Ma Ha Tuak Perimeter or take the connector north and cut off about two miles of the Ma Ha Tuak. I opted for the later. (Side note: The park has recently resurfaced the parking lot as San Juan Lookout. Seems a waste, since the only vehicles that get back there are park vehicles). I convinced myself that I would return later in the month to hike this western edge and maybe some of the other use trails in the area. Noticed that they placed trail signage where the connector trail meets the Ma Ha Tuak. Two years ago that split had been unsigned.  It was about 4.5 miles to get from San Juan Lookout back to the TH. I guess the Ma Ha isn’t that bad. It just seems to drag. Some interesting home structures along the way.
Decent hike. Nice day out (for April). Temps were probably in the upper 80’s when i finished. Wildlife was minimal, . Encountered 7 hikers coming down Hau’ Pal and then no one until I was 1.5 miles out from the TH and encountered 2 other hikers. |
