| partners | | Nick, Allen, and I met in Globe for this outstanding autumn loop hike. We made good time up the chaparral slopes of Icehouse, with the bright golden aspen grove at the top of the canyon calling us. Once in upper Icehouse Canyon, maples exploded in reds, yellows, and every shade in between. On top, we took a detour to Signal Peak, to enjoy lunch with a view. The hike so far would have been a perfect day, but it was only half over. On to Sixshooter! Starting down Sixshooter, bellows from a wild beast rang through the forest. We speculated as to what had created that bizarre sound. A moose? Chewbacca? Oh, cows! Shortly beyond, we passed the only other hiker out on the trail that day. Multicolored maples returned in full force on the hike down, with a few breaks to give our cameras a much needed rest. A new item of note was a large burnt patch along the south side of the trail, along the 6800 foot contour. Fortunately, the burn didn't appear to have done too much damage. After a jog to the west through mighty ponderosas, we returned to the floor of Sixshooter Canyon, where blood red bursts of maple erupted from forest green. Many a cow pie became airborne as I kicked them off the mountainside. The cow pie's creators were clustered in a small gang on the trail near the 112 road crossing, but were driven away easily. Back at the trailhead, we voted for Mexican food, and it was off to Chalo's Globe for a well earned dinner.
Great company, great weather, great day! |
