This area has always piqued my curiosity, but I have never made it here. When most people make the trek up here, it's 7 miles north to the climbing area. The only HAZ'ers who had done or documented anything in the area added to the interest. @MountainMatt and also @N8TRGRL, who posted a track in 2020, with no photos and a single emoticon as a triplog with a head-scratching title. This further fueled my curiosity, so I drew up a track that would satisfy both these interests.

I parked a quarter mile west of SR87 on FR9731F and started my counterclockwise (CCW) loop. I think I picked a decent area for my descent into the canyon. It was steep and slippery, but if you follow the game trails, you'll make it down.

The steep, sheer cliff walls were reminiscent of other canyons above the rim. I followed game trails to the sides where I could, to speed up travel. Quite a few flowers were still hanging on. I only passed two sections that held any water during the 7+ miles I was in the canyon.

At one point, I must have been close to a nest of a Zone-tailed Hawk. The pair circled me noisily until I was out of range. I half expected to be dive-bombed.

There were plenty of signs of bear, turkey, and lion in the canyon, but birds were the only fauna I saw.

At the southernmost portion of my loop in the canyon, I tried to figure out why @N8TRGRL called her triplog "Massacre Canyon Beaches." I could find no explanation, but maybe I did not venture far enough south?

At this point, I exited the canyon and followed numerous two-tracks and off-trail sections to find my way back to the car.

Overcast skies and temperatures in the 70s made for some pleasant hiking.
