Headed down south yesterday to one of my favorite summer getaways, the Pinaleno Mountains. Had a couple of different hikes in mind, so I started with the lower elevation one first knowing it would be warmer as the day progressed. Parked at the Cluff Dairy Rec site and headed down the old road. The first stop was at the old Cluff Dairy site. Tons of old concrete foundations and stone walls left. Continued down on an old wagon road to the Jacobson Sawmill site. Pretty thick veg down at the old site, almost PNW-like.Had a couple of ravens having a pretty vocal argument while I was down there, which added some :scared: to the site. Some old relics are scattered throughout the site, which I checked out before returning. Back at the truck, I continued up the mountain parking at the Ash Creek TH, where the temperature was a cool 66 degrees when I started down Ash Creek. This trail was recently cleared last year to the junction and it was in pretty good shape; a couple of minor pieces of deadfall and the raspberry bushes are growing back but it's good for the time being. Water was flowing nicely in Ash Creek as I reached the junction and started the initial climb. The 2017 Frye Fire destroyed pretty much all of the pine trees in this area, however, the Aspens are coming back in groves, literally thousands of them. Even though the temps were in the 70's the sun was hot and it was pretty warm on the climb up. Once I reached the peak the clouds came in which cooled it off; the truck was reading 64 degrees on the drive out! Saw tons of deer and no people on the trails all day; overall there were not that many people up on the mountain today, which is perfect. The Pinalenos never disappoint.

Afternoon trip down to the old Cluff Dairy and Jacobson Sawmill.
Colors are changing down at the Dairy and there were plenty of apples left in the meadow : wink :
Down the spooky canyon I enjoyed the old sawmill ruins, I find a new artifact every time I go down there!
Coffee nightcap back at RTM CG with the half moon before returning home.

Ladybug Trail top to bottom ... Finally :y:
We set up a shuttle leaving one vehicle at Angle Orchard and driving up to Ladybug Saddle.
We first bagged Ladybug Peak. There was a new register up there and about a hundred or so ladybugs.
Then down #329 we went-
Outstanding trail and one of the very few trails that was spared by the Frye Fire.
This trail has it all as you descend the 3500 ft down from the pines to the upper desert.
Beautiful forest, great overlooks, cool rock formations, lot's of blooming cactus and a good flowing creek at the bottom. Sky Island weather was chilly on top and hot at the bottom :|
A short hike up to Angle Orchard and drive back up to Ladybug Saddle ended our day together.
Addie drove back down and home as I stayed on the mountain for a bit more.
I had time for a quick sunset hike down to Cluff Dairy then a fire and pick me up coffee at RTM CG before heading home.
Great day on the mountain with my buddy, in fact ... top 3 favorite hike of this 2023!

First time ever hiking down to the sawmill in the snow.
Almost needed snowshoes, but got away with just yaktrax.
Beautiful down there.

Started today with a 2 mile walk up the Swift Trail switchbacks from Twilight.
So much easier seeing and photographing fall colors hiking up then driving.
Only rule, don't get hit by a vehicle ... light traffic today.
Then I hiked through Cluff Dairy and down the canyon to the old sawmill sight.
There was some real good color down there along with all the cool sawmill artifacts.
Also, the creek had some good flow ... not always the case down there.
I think I am now all fall colored out, time to hit up that AZ desert.

Chad & Addie's annual mountain raspberry picking trip!
From Shannon CG, took the Arcadia trail out to about 1 mile and back.
Both our mason jars were full of sweets by the time we got back to Shannon :y:
We then drove back down the mountain and hiked to Cluff Dairy to check on apples & grapes.
Grapes are not even close to ready and the apple trees have already been picked almost clean, 2 apples left that we ate up on our hike back out.
Then a stop at Arcadia and hike down to Wet Canyon for some creek time.
RTM CG was the last mountain stop for a little R&R.
Roper Lake stop back in town to check water flow ended this fun day trip.
Wildlife - I think this was my first time ever spotting 2 endangered species in one day!
Mt Graham Red Squirrel up high & 2 Mexican Spotted Owls down low.

Wasn't sure what weather I was gonna get on the mountain today?
Sooo ... I started on top at Ladybug Saddle and just worked my way down the mountain hitting favorite shorty's.
Ladybug Peak - Awesome views up & down. Dramatic skies 360 and a few ladybugs on top (still early for the masses).
Twilight Spring - I skipped the spring in favor of the Heliograph overlook view around the mountain.
Jacobson Sawmill - Just to Cluff Dairy to check on the apples. Ping pong ball size, but lots of them. First clap of thunder overhead.
John's Dam - Thunder to the south as I made my way down. No water flowing over, creek above dry.
Dankworth Pond - Last stop of the day to visit a friend and take in the sunset.
Cool temps up high, humid down low, little lightning & thunder here and there and the evening's sunset was good ... A good day!

Had time for a quick one this afternoon and choose the old sawmill site.
I first passed through the old Cluff Dairy site and saw that the apple, cherry & peach trees are starting to do there thing. Mountain grapes have not yet.
Then it was on down to the sawmill site.
It's always a little spooky down there (especially solo). The kind of place where you would expect to look through the dark thick foliage and see a Squatch looking back. I spent about an hour poking around looking at all the known artifacts and finding a few more never seen before.
Back out at the Dairy I met a nice local family and had a good chat with them about the mountain's history.
Perfect mountain temps, cool AZ history & making new friends ..... 👍

Rowdy people could be heard down in the canyon yesterday so I bailed on the hike. Went back today and had the entire place to myself. Wonderful trip down to the sawmill site on the 100 year old road. And as always I get a tad spooked down there ... it's deep, dark, mossy and smells like Bigfoot.
Very cool trip back in time ...

Plan was to spend the afternoon down at the old sawmill. On the decent I could hear a lot of idiots yelling down there so I returned back up. Drove down the mountain and hiked to the upper creek crossing on the Noon Creek Loop trail. Low water flow on this day, but nice and peaceful. Monsoons starting doing there thing as I left the mountain.
Not what I planned, but still a nice afternoon on Graham!

Down to the sawmill and back ... beautiful down there with some good flowing water.
On the return trip I encountered a nude man at the Cluff Dairy site ... conversation with 2x the social distancing guidelines were enforced!
I then poked around the Arcadia CG area for an hour before leaving.
It's crazy up there, all the developed sites are closed, but more people than ever are using the mountain right now.

Dairy and Sawmill area were beautiful!
Green everywhere with apples and grapes coming in nicely.
Jacobson canyon had a bit of running water and I encountered a family of Mexican spotted owls (a first for this area).
Also took a short drive down Twilight Road and rode out about a half hour monsoon downpour.
Another short stop at RTM CG and the Deadman Curve overlook before leaving the mountain.
Good Time

1st trip
Sun up to sun down day trip starting from the top at Ladybug Saddle and working my way down the Swift Trail to the bottom. Ladybugs-spotted owls-berries-apples was the plan ..... 1 out of 4 accomplished :|

Ladybug Peak - Not 1 single bug on top, where are they?
Bear Canyon - Hiked the upper trail down from Ladybug to the Bear/Dutch T. Always an enjoyable scenic stretch down with many very nice places to camp. Had a real nice 2 hour hammock camp here before returning back up to the saddle.
Dutch Henry - Ole Dutch has seen better days, could only get about .25 mile down the path before the mountain starts to reclaim it. This is where the spotted owls live and I believe FS will never (I've heard) repair this trail to help further protect them. No owls found on this once outstanding trail.
Twilight Spring - Drove down to Twilight road and hiked in to the spring. The biggest patches of wild raspberries I've ever found are along this trail and it was not a question of them being there, but will they be there? As I made my way many of the berries had been picked by bears or others?, but there were still plenty left to fill my cup all the way down to the spring. The yellow sunflowers at the spring I anticipated were surprisingly out of peak, but that was OK as I had a cup full of wild berries to eat while I rested. My poo will look amazing soon!
Jacobson Sawmill - I then drove down to Jacobson and hiked in to the old Cluff Dairy to maybe pick some apples. Arrived to see way too many people camping at the dairy and that ended my apple picking dreams. The worst decision FS ever made was removing the gate and allowing people to drive down to this old historic area. Artifacts have been replaced with trash.
Arcadia - Stopped at the CG and hiked down to Wet Canyon to check the creek flow. Wet Canyon continues to flood and I still can not believe what this canyon now looks like since the fire!
RTM CG - Last stop down the Swift Trail was made at RTM for sunset and a walk down to Noon Creek.

No ladybugs, spotted owls or apples, but I did get my berries!
Along the way I spotted - 3 deer, 2 Abert's, turkey vultures, skunk, Mexican jays & a bobcat. Also heard but not spotted were many turkeys (Bear Canyon) and something big breaking tree limbs down in Dutch Henry Canyon ..... maybe a Preston Yeti?
I choose the East side on this day because all of these trails/area were Not affected by the Frye Fire and all looked great ..... I needed a no burn day :)
Wonderful trip!

2 days of steady rain in Graham County was to end today, had to go up the mountain and see the water. Jacobson Sawmill was the first choice, I wanted to see Twilight Creek which does not often flow much, but I knew it would be today. On the drive up ALL the creeks & drainages were a'flowin heavy! Some that I haven't seen water down in years.
Hiked down to the sawmill and Twilight was running good. The whole area was just incredible looking. Spent a couple of hours in the canyon with a nice bush camp enjoying it all. I then headed down the mountain checking the flow all the way down into the flats.
Quick stop at Wet Canyon,
Quick stop at Noon Creek,
Short hike to Jacobson Creek by the Forest Service buildings,
Then to the bottom and down to the Rockstar of the Day, John's Dam. All the creeks meet up at some point and end up going over the dam and wow did they ever ..... heavy flow from one end to the other!
Awesome overcast, socked in, foggy, watery day.

After a terrible day on top of Graham, I had to go back up for a wonderful day.
Picked Jacobson mid-mountain away from all the damage.
Short & sweet hike down to the old dairy and sawmill.
Cluff dairy looked great! Lots of cool colors, mountain grapes & apples are almost ready.
Down in the canyon at the sawmill I found many new artifacts never seen.
Had lunch with 2 friendly white-tails in the very lush, mossy & green canyon bottom.
I went for wonderful ..... and I found wonderful!
