Day 1 of our trip north. We hit a bit of weather on 89 around Flag with enough hail to turn the ground and road white. A bit of rain in Page, then clear sailing. After 6+ hours of driving, this hike fit the bill to stretch our legs before checking in to our BnB.

Parking is a cluster, but the hike itself was less crowded than I expected. Pretty views all afternoon, great geology and decent temps. I checked when we were done, but I was not successful for my Angels Landing permit. I'll try again tomorrow.

Had to park a ways down Hwy. 9, since the very few parking spots at the trailhead were all taken.

Report written 5-3-2025, not sure stats are accurate as it was from my Samsung Health Workout tracker. This was Day Two of our Zion zaga with my cousins last December. We drove from La Verkin and would be heading to the east side of the park. The nice thing about this trip is we could stop at all the places one would probably just pass by. So we stopped and took the little trail up to view the Patriarchs. It was pretty steep but paved and short. Of course, the views were indeed worth it. We were still in the shade of the morning but the sun was shining brightly on the west part of the Canyon walls and mountains including The Sentinel.

After the appropriate amount of picture taking and gawking, it was back in the truck for our drive to the east side. We stopped at one of the switchbacks to check out the tunnel and signage below the East Temple. We were still in the shade but the Temple was in the sun. We drove through the tunnel. It really is interesting how they built it.

We stopped at the parking area of the ranger station area and walked around checking out the map and mileage to other areas. Afterward we had to stop at Checkerboard Mesa. It really is such a marvel. It was covered in shade but the colors, layers and stripes still shown through. Jaelyn ran part way up and looked like a bug from where I was standing and filming. We admired the area some more and then took off again.

And now to head back to do the Canyon Overlook, but wait, what was that I just saw. Yep, you guessed it, Big Horns :y: . We found an area to pullover and walk back to watch them. There were around 1/2 dozen or so chowing down on the brush. We hung out for about 15 minutes watching them until they went over the hill. Well that was fun, but not the end.

We were lucky to get a parking spot near the Canyon Overlook Trailhead and headed on up the stairs. There were more people than I thought we would see as this is not the easiest trail. You do have lots of great geology around you so there's really not a boring moment. The alcove is pretty impressive, mostly due to its short ceiling. We would get another bonus this day. Yep, you guessed it again. Big Horns :y: . There was a rather large family grazing not too far from the trail. We stopped to enjoy the moment and, of course, film and photos ensued.

The trail goes up and around and across somewhat rugged terrain until you finally get to the end point. It certainly is worth it. From here we wandered around both sides of the Overlook. We also had a snack with a great view as well. On our way back, we got our one last look at the Big Horn family. They were mostly laying down but with a little zoom, I was able to capture the nonaction.

We finished off the hike, the girls were like horses to the barn, but they would wait for me on occasion to make sure I was still coming. There were still people coming up as the shade was coming upon the trailhead. So far, a great day and still more to come as we drove to our next trek of the day.

Two videos of the first part of the day:
Part 1 drive, Patriarchs, tunnel, Checkerboard and Big Horns [ youtube video ]
Part 2 Canyon Overlook hike, including Big Horns [ youtube video ]

PS back in 2012, I also saw Big Horns in the area. I did read that the Park is concerned a bit about overpopulation.

Great way to end our Zion visit. Parking is very limited for this trail. We were very lucky. There were actually a couple of parking spots as we came through the tunnel. The trail is very doable. There is a small climb from the road, but after that the trail holds its elevation. Nice views along the way. There was a slot canyon that opened up below to the left. It was a decent drop off, but most of it was railed. I could see and hear people below in the canyon. (Talked with the Ranger at the tunnel and he said that one needed a wilderness permit to hike the canyon. Access to the slot was at the Canyon Overlook parking area. Looked very tempting and very doable). Hike to the Overlook was very enjoyable. Trail was very engaging with boardwalks, wannabe caves and great distant views. And the views only got better when you reached the end of the trail. There was a small rail at the Overlook, but there was quite a bit of exposure on either side of the rail. Fantastic views! Great reward for little effort. Highly recommended for all.

Took the in-laws on a little 2-day road trip to Page and Zion. 77-year old grandpa made it up to the Canyon Overlook in Zion just fine. The Park was really crowded though, being the Presidents Day weekend.

in 2009, we hiked most of the shorter hikes available from the shuttle stops
hidden canyon, emerald pools, weeping rock, riverside walk and angel's landing
this year, we wanted to do angel's landing again, along with some new stuff
got going around 0845 or so
a little chilly to start with
wasn't all that crowded
an easy approach, then a steeper grade, through refrigerator canyon, up walter's wiggles and to scout's lookout
the fun starts with the climb up the ridgeline, navigating the chains and scrambles
a little crowded here, with one big traffic jam - not too annoying, though
spent a few minutes on the small summit, admiring the canyon and river views
the descent was even less crowded
glad we did this one, but i probably don't need to do it again; just too many people on it
next, we went over to the visitor center and hiked watchman trail from the campground
this was a lot of fun, switchbacking up to a little butte
the trail makes a loop around the top and the western edge has great views of zion canyon and springdale
really enjoyed this hike, and there were not many people on it
after some chips and salsa in the picnic area and a stop at the visitor center, headed out the east side
hit the canyon overlook trail just east of the tunnel
fun hike on a mix of slickrock and sand with good views to the west
a little late in the afternoon so the light wasn't great
headed for bryce, and saw some bighorn sheep near checkerboard mesa on the way out

My mom had picked this out as our first hike of a pre-Thanksgiving trip to Zion with the family. I was extremely pleased with her choice!

It may be a short one, but the views are spectacular and well worth the effort. It is also a good introduction to slickrock. There are some spots with narrow ledges and apparent exposure, but these help the inexperienced gain confidence. We found a good spot to sit and eat lunch while enjoying the views after the end of the trail. Peered down into Pine Creek Canyon, but you can't really make out the rappels - interesting perspective. Always a good one.

We were in St. George to attend a niece's wedding on Friday, and decided to hit up Zion for a bit on our way back to AZ. After enduring the masses at the Narrows, we (the family) took a pit stop along the road through Zion to check out the Canyon Overlook. At the parking area, we immediately were favored with a whole group (herd?) of bighorn sheep--probably about a dozen total, hanging out on the cliffs close by. The short hike up to the overlook was very pleasant with a lot of cool views along the way, plus of course, the "pay off" views of the Canyon Overlook at the destination. Not nearly as crowded as the Narrows, and left us with a more pleasant experience to end our quick run-through of Zion.

Traffic was backed up at the tunnel while driving into the park from the East Entrance so I decided it was better to be hiking than waiting in traffic. Nice view at the top and cool stretch through a fern-filled alcove on the way up.

DAY 1 - Saturday May 31st
7.44 miles hiking and 390 AEG (39 floors) on FitBit
442 miles on F-150

With business visitors Friday evening, we couldn’t hit the road until early Saturday morning. Made good time and stopped for lunch at the Page AZ Burger King before crossing the Glen Canyon Dam into Utah :next: [ Glen Canyon Dam ] . Once in Utah, we passed some familiar sights in the Paria River Valley. Sad to hear the movie set from Clint Eastwood’s “The Outlaw - Josie Wales” was vandalized and burned to the ground :next: https://www.amwest-travel.com/awt_oldparia.html . Don’t know if I was one of the last to capture images before the set was burned to the ground :next: [ Paria Movie Road ] and [ Paria Movie Road ]

Eventually drove past Moqui Cave just north of Kanab UT :next: https://utahcaves.blogspot.com/2008/06/moqui-caves.html . I’ve always wondered if this was a structure incorporating original Anasazi ruins. A little online research says definitely not…

We turned off SR89 and onto Utah Scenic Highway 12 :next: https://www.scenicbyway12.com/ . This was a treat for the first time (finally). Red Canyon gave us a hint of the “eye-candy” yet to come. Stopped at one of the pull-outs along SR12 and hiked the Red Canyon Loop :next: [ photoset ] and a section of Golden Wall Trail :next: [ Golden Wall - Castle Bridge - Buckhorn Loop ] plus some connector trails (Red Canyon Tunnel Trail and Photographers Trail) :next: https://www.utah-trails.com/Tunnel-Trail and https://www.utah-trails.com/Golden-Wall ... orn-Trails

We eventually wandered into our “pet friendly” basecamp at the Best Western Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon City located just north of the park entrance :next: https://www.rubysinn.com/ and https://www.rubysinn.com/bryce-canyon-h ... hotos.html . This certainly was an international gathering of German, French, and Japanese tourist! After fixing a quick dinner at our basecamp hotel room, needed to stretch those legs around the Lake Loop :next: [ Ruby's Inn Lake Loop ] .

We knew the limited hiking with dog options within the national parks before we left for Bryce and Zion. Undeterred, the Bryce “eye-candy” made up for any missed opportunities :next: [ Bryce Canyon National Park Trails ] . The Sunrise Point to Sunset Point Rim Trail :next: [ Sunrise Point to Sunset Point Rim Trail ] offered our first glimpse of the Amphitheater Region. Lynn and I then took turns minding the dogs up on top of the rim to give us each a chance to hike the Navajo and/or Queen’s Garden Loops. See :next: [ Navajo Loop ] and [ Queen's Garden Trail ] .

I had scouted up the Bristlecone Loop :next: [ Bristlecone Loop ] that connects Rainbow Point and Yovimpa Points as a “photo op”. Unfortunately the trail was closed…

On the drive back from the southern reaches of Bryce Canyon, we stopped at Fairyland Point. Lynn and the dogs stayed at the rim top while I ventured down the Fairyland Loop Trail :next: [ Fairyland Loop Trail ]

With the hour approaching 6pm and knowing we still had a couple of hours daylight left, we agreed to head the F-150 over to Kodachrome Basin SP :next: https://stateparks.utah.gov/park/kodach ... state-park located 7 miles off Highway 12 near Cannonville on Cottonwood Canyon Road :next: https://stateparks.utah.gov/sites/state ... erview.png . I had previously viewed Kodachrome Basin from the south on an approach heading north up Cottonwood Canyon Road. On that occasion we had to abort our trip due to slick mud. This time I had an opportunity to view Kodachrome Basin from within the basin – nice! Pre-trip suggestions indicated Angels Palace or Shakespeare's Arch as highly recommended destinations :next: https://stateparks.utah.gov/sites/state ... ochure.pdf and https://www.trailpeak.com/trail-Kodachr ... le-UT-5584 . Once again we knew the limited hiking with dog options within the national parks before we left for Bryce and Zion. Dogs are allowed on Pa'rus Trail :next: [ Pa'rus Trail - Zion ]
Trail connects Canyon Junction and Zion Visitor Center. Prior to entering the 1.1 mile long Zion – Mt Carmel tunnel on SR9, it was recommended to us to make a stop at the Canyon Overlook Trail :next: https://www.zionnational-park.com/zion- ... -trail.htm and https://www.utah.com/nationalparks/zion ... erlook.htm and [ Error H NAME ] Once near the Zion Visitor Center, I managed to grab the last available parking spot and we headed out along the Pa’rus trail as mid-morning temperatures hit the mid-80’s. With the scene reminding us too much of Sedona (the bad, not the good), we agreed to head up into the mountains and cooler climate along a back road I had scouted up as “Plan B”. Kolob Terrace Road was identified as an alternative since Zion Canyon can only be accessed by shuttle vehicles (no dogs allowed) :next: https://www.takemytrip.com/07zion/07_08a.htm .

From Hancock Road – Yellow Jacket Road intersection, drive 3.5 miles passing the Ponderosa Campground until you reach the intersection of Hancock Road and the 4WD Sand Spring Road on the right. A 4WD vehicle allows travel within .5 mile of the pictographs. If your vehicle will not make it on the soft sandy roads, walk from the "T" in Hancock Road and Sand Dune Spring Road. It is 4 miles, one way, to the pictographs. Take Sand Springs Route to first intersection. Then a little less than 2 miles the trail ends and hiking trail to pictographs and petroglyphs begins. From the parking area, walk northeast to locate a path of use through the sand. Continue the gradual descent down the obvious trail. The trail soon becomes obvious as it continues east and then switches direction after a small drop down through the rocks. Continue descending and then traversing the hillside beneath the cliff band on hikers left. Shortly you will arrive at the (chain-link fence protected) South Fork Indian Canyon Pictographs. The distance from the parking lot to the pictographs is about .5 mile and the descent is about 150'. The pictographs sit at the back of a large alcove and pictures must be taken from behind the fence 30' away :next: https://www.zionnational-park.com/moquith-mountain.htm and https://www.zionnational-park.com/image ... ndex32.htm . EDITORIAL COMMENT; Coffee in Utah sucks. Maybe that’s too rash since I didn't stop and try the Cafe Adobe/Expresso Rock Shop in Hatch UT... Took a Starbucks “fix” in Flagstaff to return me to equilibrium!

That NPS annual pass comes thru again for $25 entry into Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, plus $8 for Pipe Spring...

Aiming for Fall colour redux at Bryce Canyon Lodge the 1st week of October (looks like only Oct 4-6 or Oct 18-21 availability)? Cabin rentals are $212 per night plus multiple convenience fees and surcharges. Want to get some sunrise/sunset "golden hour" images...

Had the opportunity to go to a friend's Ranch off the east entrance of Zion this past weekend. It wasn't a big hiking trip by any means, more of a fun cabin trip with friends full of typical ranch festivities: ATVing, peasant hunting, obstacle courses, campfires, stargazing, FOOD, cards against humanity, etc ... But we did do one small hike for the people that had never been to Zion before. This is a quick hike that you shouldn't pass up on your way into the park. It's a fun stroll with spectacular views!

We entered the park to get to the ranch at night and left the park at night... both times seeing tons of deer on the side of the road. I saw 4-5 big horn sheep in the same place I have seen them the past two times we have gone to Zion, but this time my buddy wasn't with me to stop the car for the photo op. We also drove by the house in Rockville that was ironically hit by a large boulder. They put a fence around the property, but the scene looks untouched with the car/house still trapped under the big boulder. Sad story... read more here: http://www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archiv ... o-gallery/

Zion is such a nice place to visit. I included some photos of the amazing ranch we stayed at just for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.

We were here in the summer, and as beautiful as the views are in summer, they don't hold a candle to the scenery today. The contrast of bright sun, snow, red rocks, and deep canyons is beyond words. I'll just let the pictures do the talking.

My first trip to Zion, my first hike in Zion. The first stop from the east entrance into Zion had already started out with a bang as we got to film some Big Horns just past Checkerboard Mesa. This area could be the rest of The Wave's family as it was just so enormous and awesome :y: whereas The Wave of Coyote Buttes is more intimate.

We parked before the tunnel parking and headed down the road and up the steps to continue on this very cool trail that gives you great views of the Pine Creek Narrows and back toward the tunnel. And there is this most incredible scenery left by waning sand dunes of Navajo Sandstone. And then you get to go over a foot bridge into an alcove and round the bend to the Overlook.

From the Overlook the view, though hazy was stunning! even if you couldn't see the Great Arch because you were standing on it :D ! There was also a very active chipmunk that I managed to film as he went to and fro. From this viewpoint you could see:
    - into Pine Creek Canyon where the road switches back and forth as it makes its way further into the Park after the big tunnel
-Mount Carmel and its colorful arch-shaped midsection
-into one of the windows of the tunnel
-at the most impressive Towers of the Virgin

Here are the videos from Zion - Day One:
http://youtu.be/obzyChqTW-8 Driving from north of Cameron toward Page and then on to Kanab. (By the way, there is a great Chinese buffet restauarant over where the BK and Subway and Page Lumber are located).
http://youtu.be/XfYab4fJATw Checkerboard Mesa, Big Horn sheep just past that, Canyon Overlook hike with views into Pine Creek Slot and of course into the Canyon, as well as our drive thru the tunnels.

Our first official "hike" in Zion, and even though it was simple and short, it didn't disappoint! In fact, it was nice that it wasn't too crowded (unexpectedly). This is a great first view of Zion, and if you're entering the park from the east and not in a hurry to get a campsite (they fill up before 10am) you should consider stopping before the tunnel and taking this stroll to get a glimpse of what you're about to experience.

It's a very easy hike, and the scenery is nothing short of spectacular! We scrambled around a bit on the slickrock to the north of the viewpoint (as can be seen in my gps track), and could have gone much further up the mountain if we had more time. I imagine further scrambling exploration could be worth the effort to take in expanded views.

Our final hike of the week...and it was a good one.

Took the whole family...taking the 5 and 8 year old made me very nervous as there are some steep drops...

The view at the end is fantastic...

Check this guy out...

Always a great way to start a Zion trip esp with someone who's never been here before. :)
