My friend Tom and I took a ride in the Jeep up to Sedona and did this one first and then Devils Bridge after. Devils Bridge was a zoo and this one we almost had to ourselves. Beautiful day for a hike in Sedona.

One of my favorite spots in Sedona. Sedona was extremely crowded, but 4 of the 8 parking spots at Sterling Trailhead were totally available. Started at 1250. The weather was great - low 60s and mostly cloudy. There were patches of very intense fall colors throughout the ascent. Surprisingly, the maples and oaks at the saddle were completely green with no trace of fall colors and no leaves on the ground. This is usually the best spot for the fall colors, but not this weekend. We climbed out onto a couple lookout points to check out the views. On the descent, the foliage remained green throughout the first 5 switchbacks, but then we were treated to bursts of intense color as we descended further. The bottom was all green. We proceeded over to the arch and I confronted my fear of heights for a few minutes on the arch until the wind picked up further. We did some modeling shoots at the arch, then headed back. We were again stunned by the intense fall colors and views from the saddle along the way.

This is my second favorite hike in Sedona (after Mount Wilson). Beautiful views, few people, some fun rocks to climb on, a few spots to get the heart rate up, and great fall colors. It was surprising that the foliage was all green on top of the saddle. It'll probably be bursting with color in a couple weeks.

Fall colors occur in patches here, but those patches had absolutely brilliant colors. Surprisingly, the oaks and maples were all uniformly green at the top of the saddle.

Finally did a big loop i have wanting to do for years. Probably more than i am ready for at the moment, but the time was right nonetheless so i just did it anyway.

started at wilson mountain TH and went CCW. i had premier weather for the day and on a gorgeous thursday in sedona i saw about 10 people all day. all of the trails are in great shape with the highlights for me being wilson mountain and sterling pass, as well as dropping down brins mesa but really the whole thing is pretty awesome (except the short death defying walk up 89A between N wilson mountain and sterling pass. :o )

Delightful day and happy to finally knock this one off my list

I was looking for a hike to do and decided to head to Sedona and hike to Vultee Arch since I had not been there in 3 years.

I wanted more distance than you get from starting on the Sterling Pass Trail, so we did an out-and-back hike starting on the Brins Mesa Trail from the Jim Thompson TH.

It was a nice day for a hike, and this one was an easy hike on trails and Dry Creek Road. Nobody else was at the arch, which was surprising for a Saturday. We did not see anyone else hiking until we were going back to the TH on the Brins Mesa Trail.

This is a good workout hike that has some nice views along the way.

Vultee Arch. Majestic in form, subtle in color. A top scenic formation in the Sedona Red Rock area.
But not often visited.

I surmise in part due to some difficulty in reaching it. For the east approach one must first find an open roadside pullout at the trailhead, then climb a long and steep trail up and over Sterling Pass. The west approach offers an easier path and ample trail head parking. But reaching that parking requires a high clearance vehicle (or daring skill) to cross a long section of a rutted dirt road.

And then unlike the famous (infamous?) Devil’s Bridge arch, actually climbing onto Vultee Arch involves tricky crossings over razor narrow ledgers.

But even without that photo on the arch, and with the difficult effort to get there, the majesty of the arch and the solitude of arch’s deep canyon setting make the trek worth the effort.

So, I undertook a second visit. For my first visit I took the east approach (luckily found a park slot, yes slot, a thin slot along 89A.) I loved the climb up to Sterling Pass then down the multiple switchbacks on the other side. But for this visit, I looked to come in from the west. And lacking a high clearance vehicle, I hiked to the trailhead.

No issue. As my preference, I started early, 4 am, with the assistance of a head lamp and wrist light. My route began at Birthing Cave trailhead, then along Chuckwagon trail. Chuckwagon runs easy, with a packed sand/pebble surface under foot, at times becoming red sandstone rock. The trail rises and falls through washes, never steeply, and winds rather gently through the large, wide valley centered on Dry Creek wash. Plentiful open forest along the way, with pines and manzanita, the trail sitting up a bit along the edges of the Grassy Knolls, or along ridges overlooking Dry Creek wash.

Then onto the rutted dirt of Dry Creek Road. I would have preferred to stay on hiking trails, but I needed a route that traveled from a trailhead parking spot off a paved road (thus Birthing Cave trailhead). And the only reasonable routing from Birthing to Vultee involved a segment on Dry Creek Road. The road itself ran like one would expect on a forest road maintained only for high clearance vehicles, named rutted, rocky, grooved, but passable by the appropriate vehicle. Now, I was hiking, so no problem. As with Chuckwagon, Dry Creek Road sat in the valley of Dry Creek and its tributary washes. Compared to Chuckwagon, the forest grew thicker, pines a bit taller, underbrush more dense. Not certain why, but I surmise variations in shade and soil, mist and rain, created by variations in the locations and orientations of mountains and washes, all that influences the rate and type of vegetation.

Next to Vultee Arch trail. As with Chuckwagon and Dry Creek Road, Vultee Arch trail runs parallel to a wash, now the Sterling Canyon wash. That wash ascends gradually to its source to east of Vultee Arch, and the trail rises with it, winding up and down washes, and side to side through the thick vegetation along the wash. The mountains crowd in tighter to the trail here, than they do along the Dry Creek Road and Chuckwagon, providing nice scenes visible in spurts through the thick forest.

Then to the arch itself. The trail to the arch does not rise gradually. It runs at a right angle to the main trail, straight up the mountain, no switchbacks. But again no issue, so with a bit of hand-over-foot climbing I reach the arch. I ventured up far enough to stand at the same elevation as the arch, maybe a hundred feet to the right. From that vantage point, the arch flowed gracefully out from the contours of the mountain, rather majestically in my view, enhancing the scene, not dominating.

Now, in terms of walking across Vultee Arch, maybe the daring have traversed the slick, thin ledges or steep, smooth slopes around the Arch, to gain a spot on it, but I didn’t see a feasible route. So, I just took in the arch from the angles I could gain, and just as importantly took in the serenity of the vast vistas open and visible from my spot beside the arch. The rather cloudy sky muted the scene, and in the softer light the green of the vegetation and the subtle orange of the rocks deepened in their hue.

Overall, this route from Birthing Head trailhead to base of the trail up to the arch, rises about 800 feet, but slowly, without notice. Now my quick calculation says the east approach up Sterling Pass trail ascends 1,200 feet, quickly, then on the return route imposes another 800 foot gain. (As noted, I have done the east route a good number of years ago.) My route ran 11 miles; the route via Sterling Pass trail runs a bit over 5 miles. My view, both provide an enjoyable hike, different, but good.

The forecasted high temp was 60°, but it was already 70° when we started around 11am and got warmer from there.

Sterling Pass trail is absolutely beautiful. Over half the leaves were on the ground, but there were still a lot of orange and red in the trees, which looked amazing superimposed on the colors of the canyon walls. There was also a small amount of snow along the trail, despite the temperature.

The trail begins climbing immediately at the trailhead, and overall it's a moderate uphill to the top of the pass, then downhill over many, many, many switchbacks, then a slight uphill to the arch, which is really fun to see in person. This is an amazing natural wonder. There are many overlooks along the Sterling Pass trail that are fun to climb up to see the different perspectives of the canyons. There's also a flat rock area along the side of the arch trail which is a great place to stop and eat. We climbed around on top of and under the arch. I wouldn't go onto the arch if it's wet, but it's easier than it looks when the rock is dry.

Heading back the same way provided more amazing views as we climbed back up and over the top of the pass, again via the many switchbacks. Definitely will visit again. Certainly in the fall.

Fall colors were past their peak, a lot of leaves were on the ground, but substantial fall colors remained on the trees throughout Sterling Pass trail. No fall colors on the trail to Vultee arch, mostly manzanita and pine.

This was a fun day on two trails I hadn't previously hiked. While the Sedona area can be a bit of a mess on autumn weekends, once you leave the highway, it is possible to avoid the crowds if you put a little bit of effort into it.

The colors were great and this one has some nice views and a solid workout. The arch was a great destination. I got to hike with a few people I hadn't met before, and it's always nice to match real-life personalities to the posts and pictures. We opted for a simple outnback over making a lasso loop in favor of a follow-up hike in the afternoon.

Dave Joined us and since he was meeting us there, we could set up the mini shuttle, avoiding the 1 mile road walk between Trailheads.

Up the North Wilson Trail, we notice quite a bit of recent trail maintenance. So recent, it was from the previous day as noted by @mt98dew in his triplog.

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is a much better option in getting to the top of Mt Wilson IMHO. Prettier, more cover, less traffic and a steady climb.

Plenty of flora still Flora-ing all around this loop today.

Down Wilson Mountain Trail #10 on the southside, is a bit rocky at the top. We saw our first groups of hikers on this trail.

Cutting in front of Steamboat Rock, on the Jim Thompson Trail #124, was a first for me. Easy trail and great views. You did not have to concentrate on where you were walking and could enjoy the scenery.

Cibola Pass and the Jordan Trail got us over to the Devils Kitchen sinkhole. From here we headed up the Soldier Pass Trail #66, to our next destination. We surprisingly had had Soldier Arch to ourselves for lunch.

We exited the arch through the top and made our way to the "Eye in the Sky" and then hitting the Brins Mesa Trail #119. This trail has a few interesting areas, mush-so-more that the FR152C road walk. This was the hottest part of the day.

The Vultee Arch Trail #22 was in decent shape, up to the turn to the Arch and had much needed tree cover.

Past this point is the Sterling Pass Trail #46. It is a bit "Thick" from all the spring moisture, but it only lasts a 100yds or so. The climb starts gradual and goes to butt kicker up to the pass. From here, it drops even steeper and rockier down to 89a.

A good hike. In the direct sun with no wind, bordering hot for me. Luckily, we had a decent breeze and tree cover for the bigger climbs. Good seeing Dave again. Joe was there too. :D It'd been a few weeks.

One of my favorite Sedona loops that is tough to get takers. A mile of scarce shoulder highway between Sterling Pass Trail #46 and North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is the issue.

I suggested 6 hikes and Bruce selected this loop. Figured with an early start knocking out the hwy first, it might not be so dangerous. We lucked out. Dave was returning home from a multi-day trip up north. Shuttle plus classic Dave one liners as a bonus!

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123
Typically I prefer the spectacular Autumn foliage display. Late spring green after the better than average rainfall since January was a nice change of scenery.

Wilson Mountain Trail #10
We passed 3 or 4 little groups heading down from Wilson Bench. Tread could use a rake crew.

Jim Thompson Trail #124
Bumping this from 2 stars to 3. Easily higher if weren't for all the nearby world class options.

Cibola Pass & Jordan Trail
Arizona Cypress is one of my favs. Red Rock backdrop makes it sing.

Soldier Pass Trail #66
World class trail packs a mean punch. Never gets old for me. Not busy as the mercury rises. Shockingly had Soldier Arches to ourselves for the majority of lunch until a friendly mother and daughter arrived.

Brins Mesa Trail #119
Not my fav. Highlight was helping out a happy foreign tourist family.

Vultee Arch Trail #22
Abundant rainfall this year has this one feeling like a jungle. Shade in the late afternoon makes ccw favorable.

Sterling Pass Trail #46
Rocks hard IMO. Steep both sides but the views are worth it.

Whew!!! This was work. The Sterling Pass Trail starts uphill and continues sometimes steeply for 1.5 miles and over 1,000' aeg. There were some switchbacks during the top .5 mile. That's just to the top of the pass. We planned to go to Vultee Arch so that was another 1,000' downhill to the Vultee Arch Trail mostly on switchbacks which we would have to climb on the way back. The hike to the arch itself was another very steep but short climb. We planned to continue on the Vultee Arch Trail to FR152, but knowing what we had to do to get back to my car on 89A we decided to turn around and not continue to FR152.

While it was a lot a work especially for an old guy like me, the hike was very rewarding. The very interesting rock cliffs enclosed the area and were ever changing as we hiked along. I couldn't enjoy them as much as I wanted because I was focused on my footing; lots of rocks, roots, steps and drop-offs. I'd do it again if I lost 20 pounds and got in better shape.

The "3 Passes" loop in Sedona is one that has gotten somewhat popular in the trail running community. I was looking for something around 20 miles, and with Sedona having received significant snow the weekend prior, I thought this would be a good opportunity to check it out.

This guide is the closest thing I could find to 3 Passes - I believe the only difference is this goes directly up Brins Mesa instead of going up Soldier Pass trail.

I started from Jordan TH and went clockwise, so as to do the three passes in order from shortest to highest.

Everything was pretty normal until I topped out on Brins Mesa, where it was extremely muddy, and I tried my hardest to avoid the soft areas in order to avoid ruining the trail. Probably wasted effort, since everybody else was just going through the mud. The descent down the canyon on the north side was beautiful, which the creek flowing about as much as one can expect, and some snow still on the ground.

Heading up Dry Creek road was unremarkable other than having to zigzag around to avoid the small ponds on the road.

Vultee Arch trail was new to me; I have to say it was in top form. Beautiful canyon, and when I hit Sterling Pass trail it was all icy snow. There was no sunlight in this area, so this made the ascent a bit sketchy in places, very slow, but still a lot of fun. Saw a couple of hikers at the top. The east side was a bit better, although there were 2-3 really icy spots on steep slopes.

The mile or so on the 89 was by far the worst part of the route, and it was especially bad with snow banks on the shoulder. Basically had to run on the lane stripe. This was motivation to keep moving.

North Wilson trail was fantastic. It was actually more clear of snow than Sterling Pass, and on the way up, I noticed a huge temporary waterfall across the canyon. Probably a rare sight. The bench at the top was muddy with lots of freshly melted (i.e., cold) snow that was up to six inches deep in places. I had hiked up Wilson Mtn to the North Wilson junction the previous weekend (the day after the snow fell), and it's definitely a little easier going without waist-deep snow up there...

Once past Wilson Canyon (where I missed the Jim Thompson turn and ended up almost going to Midgely Bridge), I was just ready to be done. That last couple miles was a bit of a slog, but it was a small price to pay to see Sedona in top form.

It was a beautiful Saturday, so I decided to head up to the Red Rocks Country of Sedona and check out a couple of arches: Vultee Arch and the arches on the Soldier Pass Trail.

The hike was an inverted lollipop loop that started and ended at the Jim Thompson TH. We took the Brins Mesa Trail to the Brins Mesa Trailhead, which is where the Brins Mesa Trail runs into FR 152, aka Dry Creek Road. From there we went on Dry Creek Rd for about 2 miles to the Vultee Arch TH, and then took the Vultee Arch Trail for about 1.5 miles to Vultee Arch. I had been below Vultee Arch before, but this was the first time that I actually climbed on the Arch. It was a bit of a steep but easy climb to the Arch, and there were some nice views atop the arch.

After leaving the Arch, we reversed course until we got to the junction of the Brins Mesa Trail and the Soldiers Pass Trail. Then we took a right on the Soldiers Pass Trail. We didn't go too far until we took a social trail off the left to go the arches/caves off of the Soldiers Pass Trail. It was neat being in the arches, and I climbed up on top of them, which was on Brins Mesa. After leaving these arches, we continued on the Soldiers Pass trail, stopping at the Seven Sacred Pools and Devils Kitchen. Just past Devils Kitchen we took the Jordan Trail to the Cibola Pass Trail, which took us back to the TH.

This is an enjoyable hike on some easy-to-hike trails.

We did not see any wildlife, although we saw some bear tracks in the middle of FR 152.

I was in Sedona and was wanting to do about a 15 mile hike that started from the Jim Thompson TH. I thought about the Bear Sign/Secret Canyon loop, but with the Secret Canyon Trail being closed due to a fire, I decided to do an out-and-back hike to Vultee Arch. I had never been to Vultee Arch anyway.

The trail was mostly easy to hike on, so this was not a difficult hike. This was a much, much easier hike than the 5.5 mile Bear Mountain hike that I did the day before.

The route of this hike is an easy one: starting at the Jim Thompson TH, take the Brins Mesa trail until it ends at FR 152; then take a right on FR 152 for about 2 miles to the Vultee Arch Trail; then take the Vultee Arch Trail for about 1.5 miles to Vultee Arch. Reverse these directions on the trip back.

On the way back, imho instead of going all the way back to the TH on the Brins Mesa Trail, a better route would be to take the Soldier Pass trail back to the TH (the Soldier Pass trail veers off of the Brins Mesa trail about 2 miles from the TH). That way, you could also check out the arches that are just off the Soldier Pass trail.

There was shade on the Vultee Arch Trail, but there was almost no shade on the rest of the hike...with all of the sun exposure, I'd recommend waiting for some cooler weather to do this one -- it was around 90 when I got back to the TH.

My car won't make it to Vultee Arch trailhead. Even though I've seen BobP's ol Caddy on that road :o . I chose to go in from Sterling Pass. I used part of an ol gps route from a "HAZ Hall of Famer" gpsjoe! I was a bit leary of where I could park so I parked across the street and .2 miles south. I now believe it is ok to park next the trailhead south. Room for half a dozen or so Hazmobiles. I hit the trail early and the temps were great! The trail was in fine shape IMO. Very green with some big bushes with tiny white flowers. The locust had blooms also. Throw in some grasses,Maples, Oak, and ferns too :) . A nice variety of birds, views, and the red rock and it was quite enjoyable. You even get to climb a couple thousand feet  . I only had to go over two and under two, trees all morning. A wise HAZer said this would be good in the Fall and I agree. The Fall colors would be nice to see as were the unexpected flowers and all the green. I checked out the plaque for the Vultee couple that crashed their plane here. How sad. Next I went on, across, over, and under the arch. I didn't see anyone until I was back over Sterling Pass. One nice Lady about 8am then another and finally two men by the trailhead and that was it. I enjoyed this one and would say Spring and Fall are a go. :y:

Finally got a loop around Wilson. jj felt a little uneasy driving up noticing I was wearing pants and a long sleeve shirt. "Off trail on this hike?"... no worse, the overnight low is 31 :scared:

55 degrees starting just before 9am and not much over 60 all day. Hiking weather.

Saw a few individuals heading over Wilson Bench. First time on Jim Thompson. Nice, nearby trails are nicer. Cibola is one of the nicest non water trails around Sedona.

Up and down MG Spire in 1h 15m at a nothing special pace. Couldn't clear the first pitch last month due to a chest injury earlier in the month. Healthy made all the difference. The first pitch was no trouble up or down. The slant up higher was as I remembered. First look it appears a bit sketchy. One or two steps into it and it seems impossible to have trouble unless you jumped out of the crack and off the wall.

Sink hole, seven super sacred pools then off to the arches. Morning light was the ticket last month. Just fair this round, almost dark inside mid day. Crossed paths with a group of interesting people, really just wanted to keep moving...lol

First time on the west side of Brins. Most probably like the red rock east but the west is cypress tree canopy. A pleasant surprise. Up Vultee and down Sterling. The scariest part of the hike was the last mile along the highway. No shoulder and cars whizzing by ultra close.

I'm not sure when the last time I went to Sedona was but it's been far too long. Tuesday I sent Joe a note to see if he would be interested in doing something up there between 12 and 20 miles. He threw together this loop and it turned out to be a gem.

We made our way up the North Wilson Trail passing a few others along the way. Then down the other side and onto the Jim Thompson. From here we took the Cibola trail and jumped off for a quick assault on Morning Glory Spire (this was by far the highlight of the loop for me). After the spire we checked out Devils Kitchen, Seven Sacred Pools and then the Arches.

Finishing our loop we would take Brins Mesa to FR152C and then Vultee Arch Trail up and over Sterling Pass. Sterling Pass is pretty cool and there are some interesting rock formations along the way. Down the other side and it was a short trip down the road back to the car.

I don't think we could have had any better weather. Great hike and good times!

Hit this one a little late, about 3:30p, but had just enough time to finish it without headlamps. Started from Sterling Pass trail along 89a. Nice hike. Sterling Pass trail is pretty overgrown but not too sharp, save for some New Mexican Locust. Also it had just rained right before we got there so the brush was a little wet. Took a few pics on the arch and then headed back. Dinner at Oaxaca afterwards. Meh, not the best but not the worst.

We've talked about this one for awhile and even tried it a month or so ago only to find the area was closed for 3 more days. The plan, up Wilson North #123, check out the South Overlook, out to the North end and go to Lost Wilson out and back, then down the North slope of Wilson to meet up with the Sterling Pass or Vultee Arch trails.

We were not sure what shape any of the trails would be in since they opened a month or so ago. All were in great condition

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 - We were the first vehicle in the lot at around 7:30a. The colors were still hanging on in pockets on the way up in the Canyon. The first respite from the climb is at The First Bench of Wilson Mountain. The next climb took us to views to the the South (Sedona) overlook, and give a great overview of the opportunities for hiking in this area. There was one or two cars in the Midgley Bridge lot when we went by, it appeared full now.

Next off to the North end to check out our opportunities. The Land Bridge that appeared to exist on Topo and GE from the Northwest corner of Wilson to Lost Wilson Mountain, did not exist. So off to try to complete our loop off the North end of Wilson. We dropped in at the place I'd spotted on GE, and started the thick, steep, prickly drop down. After making it down 300' we made he decision to retreat back to the top.

On the way back to the TH we took lunch at the high-point of Wilson Mountain @ 7,122'.

Next we drove over to hike up the Sterling Pass Trail #46 to the Vultee Arch Trail #22 and get to the Arch and back before dark. The climb to Sterling Pass is a steep one, (1,100' in 1.2 miles) especially the upper 1/3rd. The colors were holding on nicely. Geology helps make this an interesting trek.

Down the western side of this trail, to the Vultee Arch Trail #22, you loose 775' in about the same distance. This side has less step ups and the switchbacks are lazy in comparison.

I really enjoyed all three of these first time trails for me. Perfect weather and company (for the most part). I hope Joe is not too much of a bad influence on you Ray :sl:
