Enjoyed Bear Canyon last weekend. Decided to hike Bear Canyon this weekend. Dr. Speedyfeet reported nice conditions with plentiful water and colorful flowers a week ago and while it wasn't totally dry and dead, a week definitely makes a difference. The only water was in the main stem of Bear plus West Fork along with the lower stretch of East Fork. Spring weeds were sporadic, many looking like they had fried during the heat last week.

I hadn't done the loop since a Thimble trip ten years ago. While contemplating the option, I saw that 9L hadn't done it since 2014. At the time, @tough_boots made him do it, and there was some poking fun of the number of trails linked. I'm glad I was able to carry on that tradition today.

I've never been to Hutch's Pool so we made the quick out-n-back to check it out. It's a sweet spot, though I can imagine that solitude here is rare. Furthering my lifelong goal, covered some new ground on another segment of the AZT that I strive to never complete. Though this one might actually be worth it.

Parking lot was only half a dozen spots short of full at 8:30 as expected for a nice day in March. I haven't been here since the new creepy crawler started ops, and while there is apparently a half price option for downhill hikers, it doesn't seem to have the freeflowing get on-get off whenever you want thing that the old coal-fired tram had. Though we had no intention of hitching a ride today, it was noticeable that every seat was full, and nobody had any intention of moving. Ever.

Nice day mostly in the 60s with some sporadic cloud cover and an occasional fresh breeze. It got a little bit warmer on the downhill and eventually felt like summer at the bottom with sun temps well into the 90s. Avoided the bottom road with some new tracks along the creek and dam. Much better options than pavement.

I don't often peel off so many miles on a day hike, but I also don't often hike on pristine trails like these, which is weird because it was sorta enjoyable to have a nice groomed track for a change! Perhaps I should do that more lol.

Tons of fairyduster looking like it died this week. Small pockets of poppies higher up. Lots of Dichelostemma capitatum, and a spattering of other common seasonal weeds.

Ginny and I had slight knee and back issues so we did an easy walk in Sabino Canyon. Perfect weather and just the right amount of flow in the creek. Lots of people as would be expected on a beautiful day before the bad weather comes in manana. Started the hike heading to Sabino Dam then headed up the road to Sabino Falls, about 4 miles. Beautiful spot, can't believe I have been coming here for 0ver 65 years and this is only the second time I have been to this spot. Last time a year ago with Ginny. Other than the crowds this is a really scenic canyon. I can remember driving up to the end of the road and even then it was crowded, use to have to wait at the bridges for on coming traffic, was kind of a pain. For those who are unable to walk the road or unwilling there is a tram that will take you up the road. Bikes are allowed before 9AM.

Went on a group hike in the Sabino Canyon Area. We followed the Bear Canyon Trail westward till we hooked up to the Sabino Walkway Trail and followed that one north for a bit. Usually can't stop for geocaches on group hikes, but was given permission to find one near the base of that large stone structure (which I've been told used to be a water holding tank of sorts) and found Tucson's oldest active geocache, which was pretty cool. We then went down into Sabino Canyon and walked along the river for a bit, which had flowing water in it. We passed by the dam which had some water trickling over the top of it. We then followed an old asphalt road over a bridge then back to the new asphalt road and returned back via the Bear Canyon Trail.

Did the Phone Line trail in Sabino Canyon returning via Sabino Canyon Road. Good time of year to do this hike. A little more crowded than the usual hikes we do but the hike is worth it. Sabino Creek was running pretty good but not enough to be flowing over the bridges which made the hike back along the road easier not having to get wet feet. Perfect weather for this hike even though it was a little warm on the road portion later in the day. We took a side trip down to the creek at the upper end of the Phone Line Trail and end of Sabino Canyon road where we took a 30 minute lunch break. On the return route we stopped off at a small water fall along the creek, not sure if in the 60 years I have been coming to this canyon I ever stopped off at this place. On the return road trip rather than take the road back all the way to the start point we took the Sabino Dam Trail, much more pleasant than the road. The clouds in the sky put on an interesting show giving the Catalina Mountains an interesting lighting that was good for photos. Wild flowers were just coming out but not in full, poppies, lupine, globe mallow and a few others.

I was in Tucson for an appointment, so I decided to get in a short hike to make the drive worthwhile.
Just my second visit to Sabino Canyon ... it was lovely - I've missed the Sonoran Desert in Spring!

Too much water in Sabino Creek to safely cross, so I did a Sabino Dam-Bluff Trail-Sabino Canyon Road Loop.

Evening sunset hike starting on Sabino Dam trail. Went up Sabino Road for a while before turning around due to approaching storms. Saw a tiger rattlesnake in the middle of the road (after dark: bring headlamps people, lol), heard another, saw a kingsnake, a sand snake, and a grey fox. Good lightning show too.

The rain finally ceased as I sat in the Sabino parking lot, so off I went to check out the creek. Watching the Pima county flood website, I knew I wouldn’t be able to cross the creek anywhere. First stop was Sabino Dam, which was a muddy, frothy torrent at 1250 cubic feet per second. I joined the other flood gawkers. Very impressive, but the high water debris was several feet higher from this morning, when there was 3x the amount of water coming down the canyon. Would have liked to have seen that. Walked through rattlesnake alley, up the Bluff Trail, and then onto Sabino Canyon Road proper. The first crossing was my turn around, again a freight train of chocolate water. Went up Rattlesnake Canyon a bit before retracing my steps. Took the Bear Canyon road back for a tiny bit more elevation.

Post thunderstorm evening hike with Shauna. Fewer people out, lots of thunder rumbling above and to the west. Went up to Sabino Dam and then up the main Sabino road a while to Phoneline Link junction for a sunset swim. Water was perfect. Hiked back at dusk. Saw two baby diamondback rattlers on the road.
