Getting ready for the National Trail Trek in a couple weeks. Hiked Pyramid to National Trail. Took National trail East to Buena Vista. Took a short break on the bench, then back on National Trail the way I came. When I got back to the Pyramid trail junction I stayed on National all the way to Lost Ranch, and then back to the trailhead.

It was quite hot for early February. At least 80F by the time I finished. Ok up on the ridges where there was a breeze. But hot in the valleys.

I got to the trailhead at about 7:45 and there were just a few open parking spots.

Short hike with the dog. She seems to finally think it is just cool enough for outdoor activity. Up to the ruins and took the wash back, which she likes. Plenty of wildlife today.

Late afternoon hike. Up Ruins, east on National, Goat Hill, then down Pyramid. Occasional sprinkles. A little warm, but there was a decent breeze a lot of the way. More and more downed saguaros, barrels, and ocotillo.

Just a short evening hike to the Lost Ranch with my wife. I had done a longer hike earlier in the day [ popup triplog ] , and it was interesting how the insect activity changes from morning to evening. In the morning there were little grasshoppers everywhere. Hoping and flying as I approached. There were no grasshoppers in the evening. Instead there were lots of little moths. Especially around the creosote bushes that are in bloom. There was a cloud of moths flying from flower to flower. About one inch long, plain, grayish moths. There were some of these moths around other blooming plants, but especially the creosote bushes. All up and down the trail.

Decent enough workout loop. Bursera has some new erosion, of course. Not terrible for hiking, but probably sucks on a bike. National was mostly okay. Ruins has some new loose rock, but was actually not as bad as I thought it would be. It’s in better shape than the other Lost trails.

More flies than mosquitoes. Plenty of grasshoppers. A few caterpillars. Parking lot was full, but didn’t see many hikers. High clouds were nice.
