Started from the Desert Vista TH and took the Hawk's Nest Trail to Desert Tortoise and Valle Verde to the Great Horned Owl trail and up to Union Peak. On the way back down, took the Cactus Wren Trail around and finished the Great Horned Owl loop, and then headed back to the car.

Weather was actually really nice at the start, no major heat lots of breezes and wind to chase away the heat. By the end, it did get a little toasty. Most of the foot traffic was spotted early, but even as I finished up after 11am, there were some stragglers getting a later start in the heat.

9:15 start after dropping my GS off at school. Traveling CW I planned to hit 3 peaks along the way.
Breezy to begin with turning to 40mph winds to finish. I hit unnamed peak 2080 first and continued to Dixie. I saw a smattering of hikers and one biker (That I saw 3 times).

Next up was Union. I almost cut the hike short because of darkening skies to the west. After consulting the radar, it looked like it was going to stay west.

Down from Union (which is my favorite of the 3) I made my was back to the lot. I got sprinkled on a bit hiking and a light rain as I was driving away.

Needed to do some more practice hiking so picked this area which I always enjoy. I didn't feel like I had a lot in me so wasn't planning on any great elevation. However, I did go to the saddle of Union which I hadn't planned on doing. Quite a few people including families out hiking. The temp was pleasant, especially when I caught that breeze depending on what direction I was hiking.

I made a couple young girls laugh and an older lady complimented my shirt and a dog about ate my hand when he just meant to lick it  . Celebrated my niece's 20th last nite and FYI discovered Maine lobster is much better than Caribbean.

Despite resetting my watch and phone, hikes are still being recorded as walks. But, I ordered a Galaxy 7 last nite at 70% off. WATCH (Galaxy 3) 2:49-4:51PM, 573 calories and 13,248 steps. Temp 71.5, 19% humidity and slightly breezy.

Joined Kelly for one of her 10 mile "rehab" hikes. Lots of early morning hot air balloons up in the cool air. Quite a few MTBers on the trails. Nice to do something a little different. Thanks Kelly! :)

I needed a leg stretcher to burn off some holiday deserts, drinks and general overeating.

The weather was perfect and the trails were not too crowded. A dozen or so hikers and a few MTB'ers.

The brown cloud to the south allowed only the upper portion of South Mountain to be visible.

Early morning hike in the Sonoran Preserve. Got on the trail around 5:15. Still dark out. I had to use my phone for the first 30 minutes. The plan had been to do Cactus Wren. I got to the Wren and embarrassingly took a wrong turn about .5 from the Verde Valley juncture. The Cactus Wren flowed smoothly onto this use trail and this “use” trail showed a lot of activity. It took me a few minutes to figure out that I was on the wrong trail, but by then I was curious to see where it went. One of the dangers about social trails is that frequently there is a lot of “threading”, where the trail starts to split in different directions. This “use” trail wasn’t that bad. There was one split at .76, but otherwise the trail was a solid single track. At 1.56 the trail left the Preserve. Shortly after, the trail crossed a dirt road and continued on to where it appeared to end at the Dove Valley/Sonoran Desert bridge (around 3 miles from the Verde Valley Trail juncture). This is very close to the Sonoran North Preserve and it looks to be very easy to connect to that trail system. I kind of thought it would go under the bridge to do that, but there was no indication of that. There is construction occurring in the area, so I didn’t bother exploring to see if I could pick up the trail on the other side of the road.

I feel kind of fortunate stumbling onto this trail. I always enjoy doing new trails and this one, not only makes sense (connecting the two preserves), but is (unofficially) signed. In the middle of the trail someone had created a very well made trail sign declaring it the “Dirt Devil Trail” in honor of a vacuum cleaner found on site. Pretty funny  The trail is solid, I would be tempted to do a description for it, but with all the construction that is going on on the area I’m afraid that this trail will have a short shelf life. The trail sign says it was created in 2017. Who knows, it might have another 7 years of life before the homes come.

I took the trail back to the Preserve and then proceeded to do the Verde Valley up to the Dixie Mine Loop which I took back to the TH. Not a bad outing. Weather was great. No wildlife. Encountered 6 hikers, 4 runners and 3 bikers; (2 of the users were on “use” trail).

I’m always trying to take credit for trails that I haven’t done in a particular month, which is why I chose the Desert Tortoise for this write-up. I did take the Tortoise on my way to the “use” trail. I did part of the Tortoise with a phone light which was a different experience, but the trail hasn’t changed much. It’s a nice way to get back into the preserve with only mild elevation change. The trail is wide and easy to follow with no side trails that can lead you astray.

Another hike on the north end of the valley, similar to one we did last year.
Pretty sunrise as we got going. Nice and green out there with wildflowers making a showing in what should be a strong season.
Not as many people out as we expected. Nice day. Thanks Kelly! :)

I needed something not too steep to test out my strained hamstring after all of last weeks AEG. This fit the bill.

A weird coincidence while out there. I was jammin' to some Zeppelin, on the backside of the loop, when I came across a guy hiking with an electric guitar. I've seen backpackers hiking with acoustic guitars, but an electric guitar with a day hiker.... just doesn't make sense. Good temps and clear sailing.

Nice temps out there.

Dare I say it, "tibber's back" :y: . What a great hike I had. How great was it? I felt like I could keep going and even do a couple hills... but I got hungry  . On top of that, I found new trail and old mine tailings with a rocked up hole.

The gate was closed to the car entrance. There were other cars parked along the street so I did the same. It's a quarter mile hike to the TH from there, so not bad. I figured there probably wouldn't be many people out on the trail because of the gate closure and I was right. With my brand new shoes I headed up the trail to Desert Tortoise Trail. I love the look of my new shoes so I hope, unlike my last new pair, theses would be a good fit for a peak today. The sun played with the clouds most of the day. I made it quite quickly to the junction with the Valle Vista Trail and hung a right.

I continued to make progress as I made my way up to Union Peak. Getting there involves a couple little hills before you start the climb. I still like this climb up Union Peak and felt strong the whole way. I stopped to enjoy the views throughout my hike today. It was a very clear air day. I was happy to see it only took me an hour to get the three miles that almost gets you to the top of the peak. I looked around, enjoyed the view for a moment and then headed back down with a smile on my face as I had done so well. Now the question, how would the shoes do in this downhill? I re-tied one shoe to tighten it a bit and am happy to report, the shoes and me did well.

Now on the Great Horned Owl Trail heading east, it's a cool view as you near the cholla forest. However, the sun did not cooperate so I really couldn't get a good picture. I headed north on the Cactus Wren Trail enjoying the fact that I was feeling good and the air seemed so fresh. I turned west and kept hoping the sun would come out for a cholla photo but it didn't cooperate. As I got close to this huge rock area that you hike by, the trail split. I haven't hiked in this direction as much but I don't recall it. Well I took the trail on the right which was the wrong trail but I ended up having a little adventure.

I noticed what I thought was tailings and so I tracked back a tad and went up the dirt ramp and indeed, it was tailings; as now I could see all the huge rocks covering the hole. From here, you can see where the other trail crosses over and you can see the parallel trail I was taking west. Well I kept thinking this trail would veer to the south so that I could hook back up with the Cactus Wren or Valle Trails. Well, no, not exactly. The trail veered north and I could see bike tracks so I thought, why not. I followed it hoping that I could come to a trail that would veer to the south.

It went north longer than I thought but alas, finally a timid intersection showed a minimal track to the SSW. I noted it with a waypoint here and at the intersection that I would eventually hit with the Valle Trail. The surrounding terrain is a little more bushy over here and it crosses a little wash. The trail back to Valle did have a little cairn but the track is narrow. Well that was fun as it hooked up on the Valle Trail near the intersection with Desert Tortoise.

Feeling satisfied with my little adventure I still felt good at the 6 mile mark as I headed up the Valle Vista Trail. I was glad to get another hill in after being on flat ground for awhile. The light and mixture of clouds made for some nice photos. Before I knew it, I was at the intersection with the Dixie Loop. I really felt good and if I hadn't started to get hungry, I might have went and done Dixie Peak... kidding. I had a route on my mind and it's hard to make my mind change.

On the Dixie Loop I started to run into more people so I figured they must have opened the gate. It was a little breezier up here. The trail is very nice until you hit Hawks Nest Trail where it's a little more rocky and steep as you head down. I noticed a non-hiker with a big camera and then I saw another couple being photographed and figured holiday photos are starting. I was surprised at how many people were coming up at this time, 4:30ish. Now, if you're drinking something, hold on to your hat, I actually jogged :scared: a little part of this trail and the pavement back to where Tonto 3 was waiting. I'm surprised too. I have no idea what caused that... it wasn't long; but it was a jog.

WATCH 2:18-4:51PM, 7.62 miles burning 1033 calories, 1612-2338 elevation. 133 avg bpm/163 max. 35% Zone 5 max, 42% Zone 4 anaerobic, 22% Zone 3 aerobic. Samsung added a new zone desc: zones are based on your max heart rate, which is updated automatically based on your age, height and weight. Temperature was a glorious 69.8 with a breeze and partly cloudy but 47% humidity.

A lot of people pulling into the church lanes up on Happy Valley Road this morning. Driving on road to TH, signs up for the Phx Summit next Saturday, Nov 4.

A breeze greeted me as I started the hike and down the long hill on the west side. The breeze didn't appear again until I rounded the southeast corner of the loop. As I was heading up Hawks Nest I noticed a few leisure hikers and when I got to the top of the hill the other part of the family with kids was asking where the trail went. Really, there is a map at the Trailhead, but why look at that?

And then I ran into a few elderly folks inquiring where the trail went. I gave them the mileage, indicated it was a bit of a rollercoaster with two peaks you could climb. I sensed this is not what they had in mind so I suggested they head back the way they came and continue straight until they can see the desert valley below and if they wanted to go further, turn right and then catch the Desert Tortoise Trail.

The rest of the hike was pretty uneventful other than I noticed a few things like I could see the Western Vista trail from where you first start the Loop, I noticed a dirt dam as I approached the wash and then the massive amount of Stinknet on the east side. There were quite a few hikers and dogs out, some bike riders and a couple lizards. I just wish I had the wherewithall to climb one of those peaks but I'll be back.

Now my dilemma is, do I hike tomorrow or go to gym class.... decisions, decisions.

It's getting cool enough for me to drop my GS off at school and the get in a little hike in before it gets too hot.

I hit up the Sonoran Preserve on the way home. A mix of hiker, trail runners and MTB'ers. One of which came dangerously close to colliding with me. I got out of his way just in time to be missed by inches.

Done before it hit 90. The TH features flush toilets and filtered water.

Started from the Desert Vista Trailhead. Took Hawk's Nest to a small segment of the Dixie Mountain Loop, then Valle Verde, then the north leg of the Great Horned Owl Trail to Cactus Wren, then the south leg of Great Horned Owl, repeated the Cactus Wren and returned on the Desert Tortoise Trail. Saw a few hikers and bikers very early on, everyone dropped out fast with the heat. I did see one guy who was heading back up Hawk's Nest as I was finishing up.

On the western end of the Great Horned Owl Loop and also north of Cactus Wren, there are unmarked single track trails. I don't know if they're planned, and I can't remember seeing them 8 years ago when I was here last. Maybe worth a return trip sometime to check out. Finished up by 10:30am and got over 1100' AEG for the day, nice workout.

How lucky are we to still be able to enjoy these temps in June. Hiked counterclockwise. Took about a mile for my legs to warm up, tripped a couple times. Saw a few hikers and dogs and bike riders on the Tortoise Trail, two hikers on Valle and 5 hikers, 2 bikers on the Loop. Saw three rabbits, photos of two. Several lizards, fast little buggers.

I enjoyed the breeze off and on, mostly on. Grabbed the wrong water bottle so didn't have as much water as I like. Got a little hungry the last couple miles. At the top of Hawks Nest Trail, it was a little early for my beer so hiked another 1/2 mile to justify a 9:20AM beer, my rule is 9:30... oh well, close enough.

WATCH 7:03-9:16AM, 6.34 miles, 1596-2055 elevation. 127 avg bpm/150 max. 22% Zone 5 Max, 40% Zone 4 anaerobic, 37% Zone 3 aerobic burning 845 calories. Starting temp 71.5, sunny and 30% humidity.

Needed to do my 🦉 and baby 🐣 check up. It's still nice enough I can hang out at the house and have my coffee and do some work before heading out; so I'm taking advantage of the later start. I headed up the Hawk's Nest Trail thinking about my 6-nite backpack at Glacier in early July, hoping that I will be in good enough shape to do that. I got up to the owl nest and she was sitting up pretty tall but no evidence of a little one so I continued up. Off to the right I noticed a pretty cholla that had a Hedgehog blooming brightly right below it, made for a nice photo.

I hung a right at the Dixie Loop Trail. A lot of the cactus had buds, blooms and blossoms but I guess I expected them to be more bloomy. Although most Brittlebush were spent, there were still some blooming and it made for a few nice photos along with the cholla. The ocotillos had some fabulous blossoms and I liked that I could get close up with them. I shot more than my fair share of these plants and tried to include nice backdrops of the area and trail. And now it was to make my way toward Dixie Peak, being as Kelly has me on a roll in that regard  .

I still am fighting a nasal cold that wants to drop down into my chest so that was a bit frustrating as I was trying to breathe getting up the peak. This peak has those little false summits that get me every time because just when you think you're done, there's one more. I did actually sit down for a moment or two and shot a couple photos of the TSMC plant. It's been interesting to watch the progress.

Down I went and I realized my toes were rubbing against the front of my shoe... so I may have to change to a thicker sock to see if that helps. My big toe nails are almost done recovering from several months ago from wearing too short of shoe. It's downhill from here to the northeast saddle. But just as I was enjoying the breeze and view, 🐍 buzzed me. It was off to the right and I'm glad I didn't over react like I want to do; and yes, I snapped a picture but was only able to get part of it. Needless to say, I started paying more attention to the trail in front of me. The worst thing is I would be coming back this way but hopefully it will have continued down the hill.

I hiked the east side where the Brittlebush is still blooming along part of the trail and there was also lupine. The lizards are also out enforce and they kept me company for most of the hike. I would see about ten hikers today, most of them couldn't get a "hello" out of their mouths :( . At the saddle, Alexa reminded mt to enroll for tomorrow's "Get Strong" class and headed back the way I came. Fortunately it was uneventful other than the few hikers I would see.

I headed down the Valle Vista Trail and enjoyed going thru this valley. The Teddy Cholla are starting to bud and bloom and there was other budding and blooming cactus. I ended up taking more pictures than I anticipated. I was glad that the breeze stayed with me as sometimes when I hike down here, the breeze seems to disappear. Because of that cooling breeze, I decided to stick with my original plan and continued to the Cactus Wren Trail. Here I was delightfully surprised to still see some Owl Clover and Lupine blooming so I got distracted by that. I finished this part of the hike to the GO junction and turned back.

The trail is very nice and leisurely as I retraced my steps and then it was on to the Desert Tortoise Trail. I did encounter a couple hikers here including a gentleman with a big camera. There is still blooming desert flora to shoot so hopefully he found some good subject matter; I know I found some great budding/blooming Buckhorn. And now it was just a matter of finishing off this hike but not before I got to see a bird catch something in its mouth, fly to a creosote and then lose it; still cool to see.
I headed back up the Hawk's Nest Trail to check on the owl. I did manage a couple pictures of her and a white feather ball baby. So it looks like both of my owls only had one baby.

After work hike. Went out to the Sonoran South Preserve and did a short loop involving Hawk Nest, (for a short distance) the Dixie Mine Loop, Valle Vista and the Desert Tortoise. TH was busy……again. Over 30 cars when I got there. Planned on doing the loop CCW, but the number of people going down the Tortoise made me change it up and go up Hawk’s Nest to the Dixie Loop. Gave me a chance to appreciate the “resident” owl in the cactus. Not sure how long she’s been there, but it seems quite a few. Hitting the Dixie Mine Loop I took the shorter route to connect to the Valle Vista. On the Vista, I took it all the way to its terminus, before turning back and taking the Desert Tortoise back to the lot. I guess it didn’t matter which way I went. I encountered people throughout the hike….hikers, runners and bikers. Temps were great again, but air quality less so. Nice loop. Jogged what I could.

She's home, the owl that is. I wasn't able to get any good pictures as she was facing the wrong way. It was very crowded as I made my way up the Hawk's Nest Trail but after I took a right (east) at the top, the crowds thinned out quite significantly. I was glad I zipped off the bottom of my pants as the temperature was basically Tibberlocks perfect with a slight breeze.

It was green here but not quite like my Irish Lookout Mountain. It also has that same belly flower groundcover with the little white bloom. There was also the same wildflower fare and included some very large Scorpionweed, Fiddleneck and Narrow-Leaf Popcorn Flower. Once I got down to the Valley floor on the Valle Vista, I could feel the leprechauns were dancing among the cactus. Besides the grasses and green groundcover there was also smatterings of what I think is Gordon's or Arizona Bladderpod, which I would see for the rest of the hike.

I decided I would take advantage of the green desert and do extensive filming as we don't know when Ireland will touchdown again. Poppies were also starting to pop up but not in batches which is what I was hoping to find today. It always takes longer than I think to reach the Cactus Wren Trail; an interesing trail due to the history of the area. I would be by myself for the next few miles of my trek. It was really beautiful hiking through here today and the distant surroundings and clouds added to my enjoyment.

Wait, what the heck? I could see coming from the south a large aircraft... four propellers. I grabbed my ZS70 and zoomed into the very bad light. It took a bit for it to focus but I was able to get a few shots. Little did I know I would get two more stabs at filming this giant US Marines C-130 Hercules. And like I need any more distractions but then I came to a fork in the road that goes east and I've always wondered... so I followed it to the crest of the hill where you get a good view of the dam. I think a couple HAZers have taken part of this route GPS :: Sonoran Preserve to the Dam (but he didn't take any photos  ). This is the first area where I saw some nice grouping of poppies.

I got back on the Cactus Wren Trail where I had some great views up Union Peak. The old road that the trail crosses a couple times is filled with the golden white grass and it goes pretty far up. Along the way I would see patches of poppies and as I hiked on the Great Horned Owl Trail. The desert floor was very green through here which made the cholla really stand out. As you proceed upward on this great grade of a trail, you pass through a large Teddy forest and they are all fat and happy right now. This is a pretty trail; especially when you take time to look around to the north and east. Maybe that's why the climb seemed so easy; stopping to look and enjoy; oh and take photos and movies.

I encountered a hiker as I reached the junction with the UP Trail (Union Peak). I didn't even hesitate to go up. I guess my leisurely pace made this last climb up the peak even easier. I wish all peak climbs were like this one :) . And per usual, when you think you're on top, it's time for the roller coaster to the south side summit. I thot I was filming the first part but I wasn't (I do that occasionally). Anyway, I still filmed some up here and didn't stop to take a break since I was already on a somewhat leisurely pace... reminds me of my old days of hiking. I headed on down and did encounter two hikers and their dog.

I got back on the Great Horned Owl Trail and started hiking west when I hear a helicopter. Alas, another distraction as it was doing some sort of practice above a hill to the north of me. After I zoomed one of my photos, it appears to be a State Trooper helicopter. I filmed it as well. Well after that I continued on and rounded a corner to a complete stop. I think I found the motherlode... of poppies, :y: OMG! How am I going to shoot all these poppies? and they went all the way up the side of Union Peak. Well I managed to take my fill of pictures... I lie; I could have stayed there longer. The poppies and their surrounding flora was my first for the season so I was very HAPPY!

Ya, I even got the poppy-lined trail for a little bit. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face until I finally got to the junction with the Valle Vista Trail and I returned to the green desert floor with late afternoon light making everything glow. And it was like this all the way to and including the Desert Tortoise Trail. I finally got back to the normal desert hike as I reached the crest of the hill and made my way around the side of the mountain. Here it was just the occasional wildflowers and a few more people. I did film one of my favorite areas (the conglomerate alley) with a nice grouping of Compass Barrel Cactus.

I debated going to check on the owl but decided to take a zoom shot instead. As I got to the intersection with Hawk's Nest Trail it was back to the crowds. As I got to the desert floor near the trailhead, I admired the lower sun's glow on the flora and finished off my hike with a Huckleberry Beer. It really was a fabulous day in so many ways! I was certainly feeling refreshed.

I normally don't post my trip report and way too many photos until I get the movies done but I'm making the exception to let you know this is a good time to get out there. I won't have the movies ready for a couple days.... and I'm interuppting my Sedona trip to work on them. I can't wait to see them myself. I filmed the two aircraft too. I hope I have more hikes like today :) .

UPDATED 2-26-2023 Here they are and I think they turned out great. I do a lot of narration too and feel free to turn on closed captioning to see what I'm saying. It's rather interesting as it considers my footsteps Applause  .

Wanted to get a nice hike in before weather hits. This time I also wanted to get the peak I missed when Kelly and I were out here on the 16th. As I headed up the Hawks Nest my hamstrings were whining a tad from the dead lifts I did yesterday morning in class. It's one of my favorite exercises but she had us do a lot of them : rambo : . I never quite understand that between all the hiking and gym classes I do, why do my muscles not adapt and feel like I've done neither each time I hike or exerercise. They say muscles remember but mine have a very short term memory :( .

Anyway, it was pretty busy until I made the turn on Desert Tortoise that winds you in and around the side of the mountain until you come to the other side. I stopped to observe additional cholla babies on both sides of the trail. Some of the parents are pretty chunky too. Then it's a quick jaunt to the Valle Vista where you head west to the Dixie Mountain Loop. It's a nice warm up prior to the little bit of climbing you do just before joining the loop where there are additional little ups and downs to the turn off for Dixie Mountain. I actually like the climb up Dixie Mountain but I don't like that little false summit; altho the trail to the summit after that is actually pretty nice.

A couple folks at the top even said hello as I looked around. It was a clear day except toward the south. I also noticed some sort of road that looks like a runway over to the northeast. I zoomed a little but not enough to decipher it. It is to the north of the GO trail so if I feel ambitious I could add that on to a Union Peak hike.

On my way back down I unintentionally did a partial split skid and fortunately stayed afloat without straining anything, whew! And from here it's a cruise. Once again I noticed the very healthy teddy chollas on the northeastern saddle and there would be more of this in other cholla subdvisions. The light was such that they really were photogenic so I ended up taking more pictures than I wanted. I would encounter three hikers on this east and north side. Once I headed south, I would see a few more bike riders and hikers. As I came around part of the hill, the building at TSMC really stands out now.

I gave thought to Western Vista but decided to do that another time. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do the Vista and come up that hill on the southwest side. In retrospect, that hill wasn't as long or as steep as I remembered. So I might try a horseshoe of Western and Dixie to see how I do on that. I once again got distracted by hillsides full of cholla and about 6 ravens flying high above.

Half way up the hill on the west side, the light started to change so I got stuck taking photos of the yellow and pink hues with a couple rays of white light breaking through the cloud cover... just wish all the houses weren't in the way. And then, I spotted the hot air balloons in the distance so I gave the zoom a bit of a workout.... And then, I saw a bunny ahead. Gosh, was I ever going to get up this hill  ; maybe that's why it seemed so easy, although I was about at the top when I saw all this action going on.

At the corner of Hawks Nest, I saw the couple from the north side and we commented on meeting up with each other. They said I must have been going fast, ha! Any color in the sky was over as I headed down Hawks Nest Trail and the people traffic picked up. I changed my shoes and rewarded myself with a Huck It.
