Started from the Desert Vista TH and took the Hawk's Nest Trail to Desert Tortoise and Valle Verde to the Great Horned Owl trail and up to Union Peak. On the way back down, took the Cactus Wren Trail around and finished the Great Horned Owl loop, and then headed back to the car.

Weather was actually really nice at the start, no major heat lots of breezes and wind to chase away the heat. By the end, it did get a little toasty. Most of the foot traffic was spotted early, but even as I finished up after 11am, there were some stragglers getting a later start in the heat.

9:15 start after dropping my GS off at school. Traveling CW I planned to hit 3 peaks along the way.
Breezy to begin with turning to 40mph winds to finish. I hit unnamed peak 2080 first and continued to Dixie. I saw a smattering of hikers and one biker (That I saw 3 times).

Next up was Union. I almost cut the hike short because of darkening skies to the west. After consulting the radar, it looked like it was going to stay west.

Down from Union (which is my favorite of the 3) I made my was back to the lot. I got sprinkled on a bit hiking and a light rain as I was driving away.

Needed to do some more practice hiking so picked this area which I always enjoy. I didn't feel like I had a lot in me so wasn't planning on any great elevation. However, I did go to the saddle of Union which I hadn't planned on doing. Quite a few people including families out hiking. The temp was pleasant, especially when I caught that breeze depending on what direction I was hiking.

I made a couple young girls laugh and an older lady complimented my shirt and a dog about ate my hand when he just meant to lick it  . Celebrated my niece's 20th last nite and FYI discovered Maine lobster is much better than Caribbean.

Despite resetting my watch and phone, hikes are still being recorded as walks. But, I ordered a Galaxy 7 last nite at 70% off. WATCH (Galaxy 3) 2:49-4:51PM, 573 calories and 13,248 steps. Temp 71.5, 19% humidity and slightly breezy.

Dare I say it, "tibber's back" :y: . What a great hike I had. How great was it? I felt like I could keep going and even do a couple hills... but I got hungry  . On top of that, I found new trail and old mine tailings with a rocked up hole.

The gate was closed to the car entrance. There were other cars parked along the street so I did the same. It's a quarter mile hike to the TH from there, so not bad. I figured there probably wouldn't be many people out on the trail because of the gate closure and I was right. With my brand new shoes I headed up the trail to Desert Tortoise Trail. I love the look of my new shoes so I hope, unlike my last new pair, theses would be a good fit for a peak today. The sun played with the clouds most of the day. I made it quite quickly to the junction with the Valle Vista Trail and hung a right.

I continued to make progress as I made my way up to Union Peak. Getting there involves a couple little hills before you start the climb. I still like this climb up Union Peak and felt strong the whole way. I stopped to enjoy the views throughout my hike today. It was a very clear air day. I was happy to see it only took me an hour to get the three miles that almost gets you to the top of the peak. I looked around, enjoyed the view for a moment and then headed back down with a smile on my face as I had done so well. Now the question, how would the shoes do in this downhill? I re-tied one shoe to tighten it a bit and am happy to report, the shoes and me did well.

Now on the Great Horned Owl Trail heading east, it's a cool view as you near the cholla forest. However, the sun did not cooperate so I really couldn't get a good picture. I headed north on the Cactus Wren Trail enjoying the fact that I was feeling good and the air seemed so fresh. I turned west and kept hoping the sun would come out for a cholla photo but it didn't cooperate. As I got close to this huge rock area that you hike by, the trail split. I haven't hiked in this direction as much but I don't recall it. Well I took the trail on the right which was the wrong trail but I ended up having a little adventure.

I noticed what I thought was tailings and so I tracked back a tad and went up the dirt ramp and indeed, it was tailings; as now I could see all the huge rocks covering the hole. From here, you can see where the other trail crosses over and you can see the parallel trail I was taking west. Well I kept thinking this trail would veer to the south so that I could hook back up with the Cactus Wren or Valle Trails. Well, no, not exactly. The trail veered north and I could see bike tracks so I thought, why not. I followed it hoping that I could come to a trail that would veer to the south.

It went north longer than I thought but alas, finally a timid intersection showed a minimal track to the SSW. I noted it with a waypoint here and at the intersection that I would eventually hit with the Valle Trail. The surrounding terrain is a little more bushy over here and it crosses a little wash. The trail back to Valle did have a little cairn but the track is narrow. Well that was fun as it hooked up on the Valle Trail near the intersection with Desert Tortoise.

Feeling satisfied with my little adventure I still felt good at the 6 mile mark as I headed up the Valle Vista Trail. I was glad to get another hill in after being on flat ground for awhile. The light and mixture of clouds made for some nice photos. Before I knew it, I was at the intersection with the Dixie Loop. I really felt good and if I hadn't started to get hungry, I might have went and done Dixie Peak... kidding. I had a route on my mind and it's hard to make my mind change.

On the Dixie Loop I started to run into more people so I figured they must have opened the gate. It was a little breezier up here. The trail is very nice until you hit Hawks Nest Trail where it's a little more rocky and steep as you head down. I noticed a non-hiker with a big camera and then I saw another couple being photographed and figured holiday photos are starting. I was surprised at how many people were coming up at this time, 4:30ish. Now, if you're drinking something, hold on to your hat, I actually jogged :scared: a little part of this trail and the pavement back to where Tonto 3 was waiting. I'm surprised too. I have no idea what caused that... it wasn't long; but it was a jog.

WATCH 2:18-4:51PM, 7.62 miles burning 1033 calories, 1612-2338 elevation. 133 avg bpm/163 max. 35% Zone 5 max, 42% Zone 4 anaerobic, 22% Zone 3 aerobic. Samsung added a new zone desc: zones are based on your max heart rate, which is updated automatically based on your age, height and weight. Temperature was a glorious 69.8 with a breeze and partly cloudy but 47% humidity.

Started from the Desert Vista Trailhead. Took Hawk's Nest to a small segment of the Dixie Mountain Loop, then Valle Verde, then the north leg of the Great Horned Owl Trail to Cactus Wren, then the south leg of Great Horned Owl, repeated the Cactus Wren and returned on the Desert Tortoise Trail. Saw a few hikers and bikers very early on, everyone dropped out fast with the heat. I did see one guy who was heading back up Hawk's Nest as I was finishing up.

On the western end of the Great Horned Owl Loop and also north of Cactus Wren, there are unmarked single track trails. I don't know if they're planned, and I can't remember seeing them 8 years ago when I was here last. Maybe worth a return trip sometime to check out. Finished up by 10:30am and got over 1100' AEG for the day, nice workout.

She's home, the owl that is. I wasn't able to get any good pictures as she was facing the wrong way. It was very crowded as I made my way up the Hawk's Nest Trail but after I took a right (east) at the top, the crowds thinned out quite significantly. I was glad I zipped off the bottom of my pants as the temperature was basically Tibberlocks perfect with a slight breeze.

It was green here but not quite like my Irish Lookout Mountain. It also has that same belly flower groundcover with the little white bloom. There was also the same wildflower fare and included some very large Scorpionweed, Fiddleneck and Narrow-Leaf Popcorn Flower. Once I got down to the Valley floor on the Valle Vista, I could feel the leprechauns were dancing among the cactus. Besides the grasses and green groundcover there was also smatterings of what I think is Gordon's or Arizona Bladderpod, which I would see for the rest of the hike.

I decided I would take advantage of the green desert and do extensive filming as we don't know when Ireland will touchdown again. Poppies were also starting to pop up but not in batches which is what I was hoping to find today. It always takes longer than I think to reach the Cactus Wren Trail; an interesing trail due to the history of the area. I would be by myself for the next few miles of my trek. It was really beautiful hiking through here today and the distant surroundings and clouds added to my enjoyment.

Wait, what the heck? I could see coming from the south a large aircraft... four propellers. I grabbed my ZS70 and zoomed into the very bad light. It took a bit for it to focus but I was able to get a few shots. Little did I know I would get two more stabs at filming this giant US Marines C-130 Hercules. And like I need any more distractions but then I came to a fork in the road that goes east and I've always wondered... so I followed it to the crest of the hill where you get a good view of the dam. I think a couple HAZers have taken part of this route GPS :: Sonoran Preserve to the Dam (but he didn't take any photos  ). This is the first area where I saw some nice grouping of poppies.

I got back on the Cactus Wren Trail where I had some great views up Union Peak. The old road that the trail crosses a couple times is filled with the golden white grass and it goes pretty far up. Along the way I would see patches of poppies and as I hiked on the Great Horned Owl Trail. The desert floor was very green through here which made the cholla really stand out. As you proceed upward on this great grade of a trail, you pass through a large Teddy forest and they are all fat and happy right now. This is a pretty trail; especially when you take time to look around to the north and east. Maybe that's why the climb seemed so easy; stopping to look and enjoy; oh and take photos and movies.

I encountered a hiker as I reached the junction with the UP Trail (Union Peak). I didn't even hesitate to go up. I guess my leisurely pace made this last climb up the peak even easier. I wish all peak climbs were like this one :) . And per usual, when you think you're on top, it's time for the roller coaster to the south side summit. I thot I was filming the first part but I wasn't (I do that occasionally). Anyway, I still filmed some up here and didn't stop to take a break since I was already on a somewhat leisurely pace... reminds me of my old days of hiking. I headed on down and did encounter two hikers and their dog.

I got back on the Great Horned Owl Trail and started hiking west when I hear a helicopter. Alas, another distraction as it was doing some sort of practice above a hill to the north of me. After I zoomed one of my photos, it appears to be a State Trooper helicopter. I filmed it as well. Well after that I continued on and rounded a corner to a complete stop. I think I found the motherlode... of poppies, :y: OMG! How am I going to shoot all these poppies? and they went all the way up the side of Union Peak. Well I managed to take my fill of pictures... I lie; I could have stayed there longer. The poppies and their surrounding flora was my first for the season so I was very HAPPY!

Ya, I even got the poppy-lined trail for a little bit. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face until I finally got to the junction with the Valle Vista Trail and I returned to the green desert floor with late afternoon light making everything glow. And it was like this all the way to and including the Desert Tortoise Trail. I finally got back to the normal desert hike as I reached the crest of the hill and made my way around the side of the mountain. Here it was just the occasional wildflowers and a few more people. I did film one of my favorite areas (the conglomerate alley) with a nice grouping of Compass Barrel Cactus.

I debated going to check on the owl but decided to take a zoom shot instead. As I got to the intersection with Hawk's Nest Trail it was back to the crowds. As I got to the desert floor near the trailhead, I admired the lower sun's glow on the flora and finished off my hike with a Huckleberry Beer. It really was a fabulous day in so many ways! I was certainly feeling refreshed.

I normally don't post my trip report and way too many photos until I get the movies done but I'm making the exception to let you know this is a good time to get out there. I won't have the movies ready for a couple days.... and I'm interuppting my Sedona trip to work on them. I can't wait to see them myself. I filmed the two aircraft too. I hope I have more hikes like today :) .

UPDATED 2-26-2023 Here they are and I think they turned out great. I do a lot of narration too and feel free to turn on closed captioning to see what I'm saying. It's rather interesting as it considers my footsteps Applause  .

I ended up taking Tonto 3 out for a pre-sunrise spin on the 101 as I missed my ride to Ash Creek due to misreading the email's start time. The worst thing is it's already hard for me to get up that early and then to miss my ride; plus I had the scones, beer and snacks. You'd think at my old age, I would have learned to double check start times ](*,) . I gave thot to running up to Sedona but the West Fork Trail would be a zoo on a Sunday so I returned home to sulk and go back to bed after unpacking  .

So today I decided to run up to the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve South. I was also trying out a new pair of shoes. They were a little tight initially so I loosened up the lacing and they seemed to fit better. It was a nice day with the slightly overcast sky that I had at the beginning. In fact, I got some dynamite photos. I've been watching videos on how to shoot with a phone camera to get better shots and today I was successful at that.

After I left the Desert Tortoise Trail I wouldn't see anyone except a bike rider on the eastern part of the loop of Union Peak. I enjoyed the grade up the eastern side of the peak on the Great Horned Owl Trail. Plus you go through a fabulous cholla hillside and today the backlighting was fabulous. Granted it's not the same as shooting maples but it's better than nothing. I had initially thot I wouldn't do the peak but I felt good enough to bag it :) . I think as peaks go, this one is not too hard as it has a couple flat areas on the way up.

Today I decided to actually sit on the top for a few minutes. The light was great so I tested out my 10x zoom on my Ultra 22. I wish I had known how to work this phone camera's lenses when I was in Montana. Now that I've watched a couple videos and read some articles, I have a better sense on working the 3x and 10x. Anyway, I had great views down to the dam structure and the dirt part of the dam. I also did a pano of the mountains to my east using the 10x and I'm very pleased with the results.

On my way down, I discovered my new shoes are too short so I'll have to take them back and exchange for a half-size bigger. Needless to say, my toes did not enjoy the rest of this hike and it did slow me down. The sun was out for the most part now but the temp didn't seem bad as there was a nice breeze this afternoon. There is still lots of green flora to enjoy. I was surprised I had already done six miles as I made my turn on the Desert Tortoise Trail. And here I also started seeing a few more hikers as I returned to the Trailhead.

I like this route. Oh, I did see a few lizards and of course, various birds today as well. I hit the drinking fountain and then enjoyed my Huckleberry Creme Ale from Laughing Dog Brewery, ID (the old can art).

WATCH: 1:59-4:38PM, 6.97 miles, 1641-2339 elevation. 136 avg bpm/170 max. 44% Zone 5 maximum, 43% Zone 4 anaerobic, 11% Zone 3 aerobic burning 1111 calories. Starting temp 73.3 with fair skies and 20% humidity.

Exit the I17 @ jomax and the signs will guide u to this TH. Lots of people here but many of them simply had a bottle of water. I can easily evade these peeps!

Starting on Hawks nest, u will soon turn right at the D sign. Then a right on Valle Verde Trail reduces the # of people. A 3rd right onto Cactus Wren & now they r gone 😎

The trail winds to the left before coming across the Great Horned Owl loop. Further in u will turn at the Up post. Aptly described. Only 1 other person at the top. No luck finding the Sierra Club geocache 😣

Back at the sign I turned the opposite direction to complete the lollipop loop. Arrived at TH @ noon, home 5 pm. Had to keep this outing reasonable after a going away party the previous night 🎉

Well Kelly inspired me to get some more elevation; altho I got 800 less feet, but I did get an extra mile and 1/4 . Kelly said to me the best way to be able to do the longer hikes is to practice and I think today, she proved herself right. After out ten miler on Sunday, I nailed this hike. If I had someone to play with and a snack along, I could have done more. Of course, these trails are pretty nice too.

Saw a few people coming back as I started my hike but once I turned on Tortoise, I only saw a few other hikers and one bike rider until the top of Valle Vista. I was happy that I got up Union Peak with relative ease. The views were interesting and pretty. There was that dreaded downtown southern haze. A rather nice cloud formation was up in the sky as well so I would photograph that from time to time using desert foregrounds or mountainous backgrounds. In spite of that haze, it's funny how clear it was as to some of my distant views.

As I rounded what seemed like a long Cactus Wren Trail's northside, I debated a lasso or loop? If there was a breeze, I would do the loop which involved a little extra elevation. There was just enough of a breeze so I continued on Valle to Dixie Loop for my return. I saw one lizard on this part of the route.

And what does one do when they have a great hike, you have a huckleberry beer of course :) . I took more pictures than I anticipated but it's not my fault the sky was so pretty and the sunlight was making the teddy cholla shine. I also like the rusty fall color of the summer weeds. Tonite I'm going to an ABC (AZ Backpackers Club) meeting on camping in winter; wondering if that would serve much purpose at this point, at least here in the Valley for sure! ](*,)

WATCH: 7.15 miles (highest point 2279, lowest 1608) avg bpm 129, max 161 (21% at max, 41% at anaerobic, 37% at aerobic) burning 954 calories. Starting temp 60.7 and 29% humidity finishing at 12:02PM

continuing on my owl check-up I decided to hike in the Phoenix Sonoran South Preserve. I headed up the Hawk's Nest Trail and caught some photos of two owlets and their mom, and then finally the third raised up so I got the family portrait. There were two other photographers there as well as a few other bystanders.

I could have stayed longer as I also took some movies but I still needed to get my hike in before it warmed up. So I headed up the hill and turned east to hook up with the Valle Vista Trail, Cactus Wren, Great Horned and then UP. Kept my eye out for snakes as it's certainly the season. As I was on the side of Union the lizards really came out and I actually got a few pics. I also saw a couple small patches of Stinknet :( . I got up the peak pretty well and then came right back down and headed to the TH via Great Horned, Valle Vista and Desert Tortoise. At the junction with the Hawk's Nest Trail I went back up to check out the owls again and got a few pictures and a great movie of the eldest moving around in the nest.

I saw lots of lizards today, 2 blooming hedgehogs and some blooming creosote. I also saw several Desert Senna along the Cactus Wren Trail. I'm thinking I may have seen a dozen bikers and dozen hikers which isn't that many for this area. Altho I don't think many hike that northeast section of the Preserve.

Here is the 3 minute owl video that includes some more pictures of the owls. The end clip is rather interesting as the older owlet attempts to reposition.
[ youtube video ] Oh, the music I picked is called "Learn to Fly" but it was purely by accident that was the title.

With 16 years of hiking and recording on HAZ it’s really getting difficult for me to select a local hike as I’m burned out on most. It’s been a few years since if hiked out of the Phoenix Preserve Desert Vista TH. Here’s what Kai and I did this morning. Hawk’s Nest :next: Valle Verde :next: Cactus Wren CW :next: Great Horned Owl :next: Valle Verde :next: Desert Tortoise :next: Hawks Nest. Not a lot of traffic this morning with a 8:30 start and several long distance vista views. Plus it’s only 24 minutes from my house. I’ll be back soon.

I saw that Linda had been hiking up in my area a couple weeks ago so suggested if she comes up this way again, we could hike together. And then, she took me up on it and I thot "what was I thinking" cuz I'll never be able to keep up with her let alone bag some peaks ](*,) . She assured me, however, that this would be a talking hike.

We had planned for a week ago but the temps were too hot so we arranged to meet this AM at the TH. I took along my trekking poles to help with the uphill. Surprisingly Linda kept the perfect pace for our climb up Union Peak and I was able to keep up. Quite a bit of haze to the east for our short visit at the top. On the way down we had the option to continue on the Cactus Wren so we went that way. The last I had been on this whole trail was in Jan 2014. But before we got to the bottom we were both surprised to see so much cholla on this side of the mountain and what appeared to be an old road that goes straight up that mountain... to do what?

We both enjoyed the Cactus Wren Trail; especially when we saw some sort of what looks like mining activity that must have taken place back in the day. We explored around this area by what appears to be an old road and noticed similar activity to the west of here on both sides of the trail.
https://sonoraninstitute.org/files/pdf/ ... 312012.pdf USGS Porphyry Tracts Copper, Lead, Zinc Occurrence STUDY. I also found this https://www.phoenix.gov/parkssite/Docum ... 8_Plan.pdf that is pretty interesting actually. It covers the whole valley! One of the things I picked up was: desert restoration is more costly than preservation since natural processes alone take decades to reestablish flora and fauna. Tests done at the Desert Experimental Range in Utah indicate that once damaged, desert plants may take 30 years to improve from poor to good condition and some species never recover (Ginsberg 1976)
But now after all that Rx, I found this on HAZ [ triplog ] , check out the trip report and I think that explains it and maybe some of the other things Linda and I observed along this part of the hike. However, LINDA, you shouldn't probably watch the videos since you're not fond of flying. The area where the aircraft landed starts around the 20 minute video in the second video. I found this as well: http://www.arizonawrecks.com/wrecksfrom ... alley.html

Next up was Dixie Peak for Linda and a break for me; just didn't have it to get up there too. And since this was really Linda's hike I suggested we do Western Vista; I felt I should be able to do that one. Along the way I noticed some trail work had been done to provide for the coming rain to keep the water draining off the trail; would be nice to see it tested out. I climbed 1/2 way up Western Vista and waited at the saddle for Linda to top it off.

From there it was down from Cholla Saddle, the second area where we observed many cholla for the day, and alongside the wash and then up the last long hill to join up with Hawk's Nest and finish off our day... a little longer than I think we anticipated. Linda set a good pace for me and it ends up being my longest hike and AEG of the year... surprised? me neither

Linda agreed to help me drink my Pecan Pie Ale from AZ Wilderness Brewery and then we parted ways.

Met up with Angela at the Desert Vista TH just after 0800 and we got started. Cool, but no breeze. We headed over to Union Peak first. Hazy views to the east and southeast.

From there, we looped around and headed over towards Dixie Mtn. I was surprised to see several areas with mining evidence along Cactus Wren Trail. Definitely getting warm by the time we reached the turnoff for Dixie Summit. I headed up there real quick, then we continued along the loop. Angela talked me into heading over Western Vista as well.

We headed up Western Vista, which at least had a mild breeze. From there, we finished out the loop back to the trailhead. Angela kindly brought refreshments (thank you!), so we relaxed for a few minutes before heading out. Good to see Angela again, and great conversation. A handful of people on the trails, almost nothing in the way of wildlife.

The threat of thunderstorms didn't keep Carey and I off the bikes this morning. First time riding at Phoenix Sonoran Preserve out of Desert Vista trailhead. Great sunrise views and tasty flowy trails made it worth the early morning trip.

from yesterday's triplog:
"if at first you don't succeed" and "get back on the horse" hike tomorrow
I'm happy to report: Mission Accomplished and happily.

I got up 15 minutes earlier than last Saturday. The humidity would start about 8 pts less than last weekend. I wore my regular backpack and hiking boots, and tried my additional hat from https://www.outdoorstribe.com/products/foldable-sun-hat (so far a real winner thus I ordered again). The temps started in the low 70s at 6:30AM and a great breeze!

My hike started off with a bunny rabbit which was pretty cool since I saw two at the end of last evening's hike. It really is a beautiful desert here; especially as you get away from the houses. I started off on the Desert Tortoise to the intersection that I took west last time. This time the conditions were much nicer so I had no doubt about doing Union Peak (eastish). I did have to backtrack twice on the trail as I hadn't done this since 2014.

The only thing that threw me off was the C (Cactus Wren) Trail that split in two and I seemed to recall going south was the appropriate choice here and it was. You are on the Valle Verde and Cactus Wren at the same time as I think maybe the Cactus Wren does some kind of 1/2 circle. Altho looking at the Park Map, it doesn't show overlap. https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mi ... 01113&z=14

I hit the rise and then the Gt Horned Owl splits off to the east toward Union Peak. This is what I call the ramp that takes you to the Union Peak junction. You gain some elevation here before taking the turn up Union. The elevation continues to gain and just when I thot I was close to the top I came to a corner and realized, nope, not yet as I hiked around to the other side of the mountain and finally made the ridge part of the hike that takes you up and down a few times. Finally, success. I sat down and had a snack and enjoyed the views around me and there was only me on this mountain top. I spotted things here and there including the dam I can see from the floor of the North Phx Sonoran Preserve [ photo ] .

Back down I went heading back over to the Dixie Mountain Loop. I was surprised how many pictures I took :stop: on the way but those blooming saguaros are really something. Oh, and I saw a little bunny as well as all sizes of lizards; all of them too fast for photos. There is one section along the Valle Verde that has a great stance of large and fat saguaros. Of course, once I got down to the desert floor the population of people picked up (hikers and bikers). And before you knew it, I was on the Dixie Mountain Loop which gradually rises as you hike in a counter-clockwise direction.

I reached the saddle where you can hike to Dixie Peak, but not today. I opted for a snack here before pressing on to the staying on the "getting back on the horse part" of the hike for me. I had tripped several times previously already so I tried to pay extra attention; but you know how that goes. However, I hiked past the "Tib berrr" area and stayed upright for the rest of the hike. I didn't run into too many folks as I made my way around the north and west side. I gave thot to doing the Western Vista summit but I was already late for my 9:45AM beer so the beer won out; especially cuz it's one of six that I have left.

As always, I enjoyed the Teddy Cholla saddle area before completing the western part of the hike. And now to complete the hill which wasn't too bad especially as there was a light breeze. Just before Hawk Nest Trail, this one hiker walked by with his eyes straight ahead; he wasn't going to acknowledge me let alone say hello so I laughed and may have said something else under my breath. For the most part today, the hellos were unabashed. I did see a few hikers with masks again...I'm sorry, I just don't get it but whatever.

And now to get down that Hawks Nest Trail to Tonto Jr. to celebrate :y: . Kelly, I have a great idea for a hike for next fall. Let's do the high points of the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve. We can do this side in the morning (3 peaks), have lunch and do the North Preserve after (2 peaks). It's not much for you but I think it would be fun; well not exactly fun but a worthy task.

While I was enjoying my huckleberry lager, though 45 mins late, a returning hiker started his mini-van remotely before he arrived. I hope that feature comes with Tonto III in Sept. Anyway, he is from WI and moved to AZ in 2003. He likes it here as well. He was familiar a bit with MT so we talked about that for a moment. I like this having a beer in the parking lot as the last two times I've had some good conversation.

I put together a slideshow video with music by LosDosSloFolks. The video has a few more pictures including of the blooming saguaros: [ youtube video ]

Was planning on hiking Governor's Peak today, but it was raining pretty good over by Lake Pleasant and the outlook didn't appear to be improving any time soon so we headed to Desert Vista to hike PSP. Got to the parking lot about 6:30 and it was already 30% full. Didn't run into too many other preserve users until we made our way back to Dixie Mountain Loop. Then it was a steady stream. Owl's were perky and ready to pose for some pictures. Parking lot 100% full upon return with a number of cars circling waiting for a space to open. Park ranger was passing through the lot and stationed at the entrance gate.

After work jog. Got to the TH around 4 pm and found it close to capacity. :o Typically see 4-5 people on a busy day. Today I saw close to 80 as I did my lasso. Crazy! Went in on Hawk, then Tortoise, then Vista to get to the Cactus Wren. Then took the shorter leg of the Owl back to the Vista. Then retraced my steps to get back to the TH. Had a runner in front of me at the end who I tried to keep pace with. Never gained any ground, but my time was better because of it. Weather was great again. No wildlife except for 1 brave rabbit. Who can blame the wildlife with the city coming to the trails!

I hiked a spastic looking figure-8 that included seven trails. If you want to follow my route, see the attached route. Or you could just wing it: With all the signage in Phoenix’s city parks, you have to try to get lost. (That said, the day before a rescue chopper was airlifting some doofus off North Mountain, across from my office window.) 🤪

All the trails were in great shape!

Brittlebush predominated — as they have for the past month throughout Phoenix — but there were also some lupine along Hawk's Nest Trail.

The flowers along this short section of Dixie Mountain Loop included desert chicory, lily, lupine and brittlebush.

While Hawk’s Nest Trail and Dixie Mountain Loop existed when I first hiked the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve [ photoset ] , the next five trails were either under construction or in the planning stages.

The flowers along Valle Verde Trail included lupine, globe chamomile, lily, fiddleneck, owl clover, scorpionweed and lots of Mexican gold poppy.

Cactus Wren Trail is also rated moderate, but other than a few wash crossings was also flat. It should be rated easy. I continued to find Mexican gold poppy and scorpionweed, while the owl clover and lupine density increased. I took some really nice photos with multiple flower species mixed tightly together. 📸

Cactus Wren Trail is where I had my first rattlesnake encounter of the spring: A small, maybe 30″, western diamondback with indistinct diamonds. A retired couple, completely unaware, were resting in the shade a few yards away. That’s the thing about rattlesnakes: They are all around you, all the time, you just never realize it because they don’t feel threatened enough to make you aware of their presence.

As elsewhere throughout the Sonoran Desert Preserve, there is very little shade on Great Horned Owl Trail. I tried to make myself small under a palo verde while I swapped out water bottles.

I was tired enough I wasn’t sure I wanted to even try Union Peak Trail, but I made it. 👍

South past Deer Valley Airport, I could clearly see Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, North Mountain and Shaw Butte. The only summit flowers were the sole desert globemallow of the day.

After an extended break on Union Peak, including a hiking beer — Hofbräu Dunkel — I headed back down to the saddle, then west on Great Horned Owl Trail, where I found large, dense patches of Mexican gold poppy.

On Desert Tortoise Trail, I was in no mood to take pictures or even much notice what kinds of flowers it had, other than the ubiquitous brittlebush. (Besides the climb up Union Peak, I was under-watered for higher than expected temperatures.)

Beautiful day for a hike, about 80 degrees. The hike combines Hawk’s Nest/Valle Verde/Great Horned Owl/Union Peak/Desert Tortoise to form a double lollipop loop.

The trail allows hikers an opportunity to stretch their legs. We easily hiked at about 2.7 miles per hour. The hike starts with a farily aggresive up hill climb, but soon levels out, with some mild hills. Union Peak is the hardest with about a 265 foot climb. However, since the climb is in about .44 miles it's steep.

The trail is easy to follow, but hikers should have a map since a wrong turn at any juctions could cause problems.
