Started from the Meridian TH and hiked westbound into Usery with some shade at first and then the sun on my back rather than in my eyes. Took the Pass Mountain Loop Trail over to Blevins, where I soon saw a D-back sunning itself on the trail not bothered by me. I gave it wide berth and moved on.

Hiked the Vista Trail and took half of the Merkle loop back to Blevins, then took that and Meridian over to Cat Peaks Traill and headed back on the Pass Mountain Loop Trail. I hiked the Meridian Interpretive Trail by there to get an extra half mile in and make it a respectable 8 miles for the day, all before 9:30am. Got off the trails before the heat started to kick in.

More hikers than bikers, but traffic overall was pretty light. The D-back was the highlight of the morning. Meridian lot was surprisingly full when I got there before 6am and empty when I got back.

The park was BUSY today. This is close to a nature trail. The vista portion is not. Brittlebush was the dominant flower today.

Morning hike close to home, started at 6:15 and finished at 9:15. Saw a couple hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers, but overall pretty light trail traffic. Took a side trip up and over on the Vista Trail, a favorite of mine of the Park trails. Saw one snake, I believe it was a striped whipsnake, black and brown strips lengthwise. Great weather on this day.

Decided to combine sections of the following trails for a 7.1 mile loop (of sorts)
1. Meridian Trail
2. Cats Peak Trail
3. Blevins Trail
4. Vista Trail
5. Merkle Memorial Trail

Temperatures are kicking back up, So decided to do an evening/night hike.
Clastic desert scenery, boy the desert is happy with the rain it has been getting lately, things are turning green out there.

Taking a few days off this week so decided to do two hikes today! Parked near the exercise equipment Ramada by the Merkle Trail, cool and breezy had a quick warmup by taking the Vista Trail and then over to the Wind Cave trailhead. Not too busy yet about average for a weekday but much busier with a full lot on my second pass, kept a steady pace all the way to the cave . There was about a dozen older kids and a couple of adults in the now noisy cave so I didn’t enter so no break here. Having the idea I was heading over to Lone Peak later decided not to head up to the south summit. Passed by a friendly young lady running :o up the trail and back down while I was descending. After the Merkle Trail had a snack break back at my vehicle and then headed back to the Wind Cave trailhead. Took Pass Mountain loop trail to the junction with Maricopa Trail. Starting down that I was passed by the only biker I saw today. Once I spied the route to go up Lone Peak I made a diagonal over to it vegetation was not that bad, helped by using some of the ATV tracks. Once heading up passed two young girls headed down having stopped to take pictures at the shade tree with the semicircle of rocks arranged for sitting. Once at the summit took a prolonged break ,even laid down on the bench. There was a young lady sitting off on her own enjoying the views , I guess she decided I didn’t look too scary and she came over to the summit area. Saw no one else until all the way back on pass mountain loop trail. Fortunately mostly downhill from here so was able to finish up quickly . What a nice day to be outside to enjoy the beautiful desert despite minimal wildflowers. Again only a few paltry poppies and lupine not photo worthy on these trails that are usually teeming with them, hope 2022 is better.

Most of my hiking in Usery Park has been on or around Pass Mountain and the loop. Decided today to explore some of the trails on the south side of the park, as a trail run.

Started on Meridian trail, from Meridian Road. Meridian is kind of blah—just kind of a way to get from one point to another. Along the way, did a figure 8 loop of Cat’s Peak and Pass, which has a little elevation and allows for some views of the surrounding area. Saw a group of 5 deer on the east side of the peak.

After completing the figure 8, hopped on the Blevins trail, which is also rather blah and more of a connector trail. Followed Blevins over to the Merkle trail, which circumnavigateds a couple of small hills. The Vista trail splits the Merkle trail, over the ridgeline of the two hills. This was the highlight of the explore for me. Just some moderate aeg, but some nice views and trail along the way. I did it twice.

Then hopped on the road and ran around by the Wind Cave TH and finally back on the trail along the southern side of the Pass Mountain Loop.

Final assessment: Other than Vista and the Cars Peak Pass, South Usery seems best suited to beginner mountain bikers.

I didn't feel like driving far, so I hiked close to home at Usery Park. There was a section of an unmapped trail I saw off of the Ruidoso Trail last March, so I planned out a circuit to hit that and a few other trails. Started from Area 10 and took Blevins over to the Merkle and Vista Trails, which I haven't hiked in about 15 years. A couple was having professional photographs of them with the pregnant mom in a white dress. The first born was not happy to be out in the desert at 6am. Along the Vista Trail, I could hear the kid screaming while the dad tried to keep him calm.

Headed east then south along the Meridian and County Line Trails, hit the unmapped trail, then back westward along the Channel Trail. I think I found one more unmapped trail while hiking along the Channel Trail. Not sure if I've hiked the Channel Trail in its entirety before, always seemed to get sidetracked.

Hazy most of the morning from the wildfires. Seemed a little brighter, but the haze was still there. Made for not many good pics other than the sun right at the horizon.

The weather took top billing today. Although a short trail, the Vista Trail is one of the best in the park, IMO.

Been testing out GPSBabel. Like that it can be used from the command line. Lots more to learn.

On Friday we hiked the 3108 Ridgeline so to be fair, yesterday we hiked the neighboring Pass Mountain Ridgeline. Started from the Crismon gate which added a couple miles and allowed us to check out some new to us park trails. On this hike we dropped off the ridgeline to the west following the clearly marked trail which was a first for me. Although a little loose, I prefer this exit route.

Merry Christmas all!!

2.5 laps and one over the top. Hurt my Hami bowling yesterday so had to do an easy one. This is a nice little trail for all. Nice cacti variety with Brittlebush,Hedgehog, Fairyduster putting on a good show. I saw my first Diamondback of the season. Nice morning!

Last minute decision to go here today, started at Meridian TH, before starting the loop took the short hop down Meridian road to begin on Meridian trail then Blevins , Vista, and Merkle trails finally joining the loop at pass mountain TH ,also added a short trip up toward the ridgeline at the Maricopa Trail junction . Poppies, lupine still blooming but drying out, may last a couple of more weeks, hedgehogs coming out now with there beautiful magenta colored flower. Saw a Gila monster in thick vegetation, no reasonable photo possible. Nice new restroom at the Pass Mountain Trailhead no more port a potties, would suggest a good workout by parking here and hike up to the wind cave via windcave trail and return on the gentle downhill slope on this portion of the loop trail , avoids the crowded small wind cave lot, adds about a mile to the wind cave hike. Cloud cover and breeze kept it cool until midday, trails were populated also until then , only saw 1 hiker on the way down from the saddle to the trailhead. Weekdays are nice as only came across 2 mountain bikers and that was on Blevins.

I missed out on a Sedona hike with Chris and Wally on Saturday because of family stuff, then I missed out on another hike up to Quartz Peak on Sunday because of my run in with a Korean BBQ (gotta cook that meat ALL the way next time). So, rather than get shut out all weekend, the wife and I decided to do an easy one out at Usery. We did the Merkle loop and then "ascended" the Vista Trail.

The sunset was nice and although not quite Sedona or Quartz Peak, I still got in a hike.

Better results today. We didn't let Lily get lost. We did the loop hike and the Vista trail to the top then over to the playground. We picked up trash and walked over to the ramada next door to throw it away. The lady there said we just missed a rattlesnake. It slithered by the ramada on his way home :o . Palo Verde trees have a nice bloom and we saw a few Saguaro blossoms too. Stopped by the nature center to see the reptile exhibit and a nice variety of birds out back at the feeders and water feature. :D :y:
