A tale of two trails, err, I mean, one trail and essentially a route. Now I know why Sunrise Peak from 145th Street has over 5.4k activities recorded on Allfails and the 136th Street Spur less than 200. If you like plodding through sand, climbing over boulders, getting coated with Brittlebush pollen and dodging agitated vipers with very limited views of bougie McMansions, then the 136th Street Spur will be up one's alley. I'd repeat the Sunrise Trail again, the 136th Street Spur, not so much.

Mapped out an adventure which went above and beyond what the avg. hiker would set out for. The person I went with wants to hike Flat iron. I loved the views from the previous outing.

So we scrambled up 136th st., around others for 2/3rd of a mile on Sunrise, then took Andrew Kinsley into Fountain Hills. Next, we reached Adero Canyon TH and from there Overlook to the end of Ridgeline. 7 miles each way with a lil bit of everything.

Note: route looks slightly odd and the stats aren't exact cuz battery died toward end of outing.

I've done Sunrise many times, many ways, but never this way. I started at the main parking lot for Sunrise and hiked up to the top and back down the other side via the 136th St spur trail, back to the neighborhood and back to the car. One big loop. It was very nice except the road-walking part. Not too hot, not too crowded. I took a break on top and watched and listened to all the building going on near Adero and they were very busy. I remember years ago there was nothing around here, I wish it would slow down. Anyway a great hike!

Posted this outing to meetup. Least response I have received b4 😐 1 person showed up so good enough. We scrambled up 136th St Spur & then followed a route I had previously mapped out.

We hiked to Taliesin Overlook & then took a different path back. Ate at a small healthy restraunt in Scottsdale on the way back.

There's a section of the Lost Dog Wash Trail that I hadn't hiked in about 15 years, as well as a while since I hiked the 136th St Spur Trail, so i put together this loop with a spur. The Scottsdale lots don't open until 6:44am this time of year, so I slept in a little and got there after 7. I parked at the overflow lot and started up the Sunrise Trail. Passed a few groups of hikers on the way up and decided to hit the peak. From there I headed down to the Lost Dog Wash and took that down to the first trail junction down by that trailhead there. Then I headed back up and hiked down the 136th St Spur Trail. 136th is mostly just following the wash, which gets a little bit tricky in a few spots with the waterfall dropoffs. Then it seems to go on longer that I remembered until it hits Via Linda. I thought the total mileage would be between 8 and 9 miles, but it ended up over 9, which didn't bother me at all. Nice to get a decent distance and AEG hike in. Weather stayed cool all morning, which was also a nice bonus.

It was a cool day so I decided to do a hike close to home. Starting from the Adero Canyon TH I went up to Sunrise Peak. Then when I got back to the hitching post I figured that I would go to the Lost Dog Wash TH to get some extra miles and elevation gain. However, when I got to the junction for the 136th street spur trail, I decided to take it since I had never been on it.

The 136th street spur was a steep trail for about 1/4 mile, at which point it leads to a wash. The was was a fun rock scramble and it was a lot different from what I was expecting. It was more like a canyon in a wilderness area. But after a bit the rock scrambling ended and I was walking in a sandy wash with houses in view. I walked a bit through the sandy wash and decided to retrace my steps back to the Sunrise Trail. The rock scrambling was fun on the way back also.

When I got back into the Fountain Hills preserve, I took a detour up and over the West View Overlook, aka Peak 3098. On the descent back down to the Promenade Trail I heard a snake rattling in some grass not far from the trail, but I never saw the snake.

There were not many people out on the trails, and with the cool weather and overcast skies it was a nice hike. I enjoyed the 136th Street Spur much more than I thought that I would.

There were a few ocotillo flowers to be seen, and in the 136th street wash I saw some ironwood trees starting to bloom. I think that the ironwood trees will be pretty in the coming days.

We arrived at the Sunrise peak trailhead around 6pm and the main parking lot was full. Most normal people would just head over to the backup parking lot right down the road, but I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of sharing the peak with all of those people. James had done it from 136th Street prior and had said it would be longer and more difficult, but that there would be no people there. So off we went to that trailhead where the adventure began. The hike starts off in a crazy sandy wash that goes on for a while. So. Much. Sand. If the sand isn’t bad enough, next up you’re just full on bouldering and scrambling in a canyon. Umm, I didn’t realize I would be doing a 3 points of contact type thing in the Mcdowells. It seemed super unnecessary that this is how they created the trail :? After the bouldering section, you’re suddenly on a steep uphill section with jagged rocks all over the “trail” - so fun. All the uphill in 100 degrees was not pleasant and I was getting tired and moving slow. James is an alien hiking beast who seemed unfazed by the heat/climb while I was dying and I may have told him I was going to murder him if he was videoing me while I was struggling... oops! :sorry: The sunset was uneventful, but we’d been excited to get a view of the full moon so that was motivating. The climb brings you to the backside of sunrise peak and we didn’t even summit since we had so long left to go. We did take a quick break and enjoy the full moon plus the city lights, and it was very pretty. With about 1.5 miles left on the sunrise peak trail, we encountered a baby rattlesnake who was NOT happy we were out there hiking. James almost stepped on it, so we’d already pissed it off, then it didn’t want to move much off the trail for us. I was definitely not comfortable passing it since the trail was narrow, steep and slippery (gravel type rocks) in that section. :scared: We ended up bushwhacking off trail climbing over boulders to avoid it. Yikes! I was using my headlamp and could see so many scorpions on the trail. I know they are there, but I really prefer not seeing them so much. :pout: So we continue hiking down the peak in the dark for a while, but oh no the hike is not done yet. Since we hadn’t set up a shuttle vehicle, we had a couple of miles left of road walking until we reached the car. Although I was happy to be on flat ground, the extra miles were still pretty tiring. We finally reached the car around 9:45pm and it was still 97 degrees at the time. I don’t do well in the heat, so I was really glad that I’d thrown a frozen Gatorade in my backpack, since it was definitely needed. If you are crazy enough to want to try out this route, do yourself a favor a set up a shuttle vehicle to avoid the road walking at the end. But if you enjoy torturing yourself and avoiding crowds, go ahead and give this route a try. Maybe wait till it cools down a bit though ](*,)

I like this alternate way up Sunrise Peak! More challenging and less crowded!
The trailhead only allows about 5 cars, but it's rarely a problem.
Having hiked on the main trail to the peak before, I wanted to try something different. It's fun!
You follow the wash out of the neighborhood before connecting to the main Sunrise trail coming from Lost Dog.
There are a few rough spots to climb, but not too bad. You clamber over the boulders in the wash. And pass under a couple bridges with neat designs on the walls. I say if you want a little something different, give this trail a try!

I have not been out to Sunrise this year, so this seemed a great alternative to my heavy doses of SOMO and the Phoenix Mountain Preserves lately. Pulled in to the 136th street TH about 4:30 to get my hike started. I did not like the look of the automatic closing gate and 'closed at sunset', so I backtracked and parked in the almost deserted shopping center at 136th & Via Linda. I started up the wash, this is definitely the best trail on the Sunrise end of the park. Made it up to the summit in pretty good time, and saw my first other hikers of the day. I took a nice break up top to enjoy the views and then made my way down the 145th side. Saw about a dozen hikers coming down this way, nice easy decent too. I took the Equestrian spur from the 145th TH and followed that around to the dirt 'trail' that follows along Via Linda and took that back to the van. Absolutely fantastic sunset tonight, so much color in the clouds!

My usual trip to Tucson was filled with nice periodic rain, so I kept heading north until I could get a break in the storm for a hike. I ended up doing Sunrise from 128th street, and the weather was great. Got to the trailhead a bit before 5 and started off. I saw 4 hikers early on, and then nobody after the first 15 minutes or so. I got on and off sprinkles for most of the hike, but never enough to need my rain jacket. Took a nice break on top to enjoy the views and then headed back down. I decided to check out the 136th street spur instead of heading back the way I came, this trail was probably my favorite on this mountain. Very faint trail with some nice bouldering spots, I will have to make this my next ascent. Light was failing and I scrambled up onto the neighborhood street and took Larkspur back to where the van was parked. Some mighty expensive houses up here...

Got my butt out of bed and was at trailhead just after 6am. This loop has been on my to do list for a while. I used Sunrise Peak 136th to 145th Loop GPS Route by @BiFrost, but I started at 145th St and went counter clockwise down to 136th St.

I really enjoyed the top end of the 136th St Spur, coming down through the canyon with all the boulders, although it was slow going with many big drops in the canyon wash. It actually felt cool in there. Many spots you would never guess there were big homes right above the canyon wall if you did not know better. However I never got onto 136th St - where BiFrost's route shows an exit from wash, there was new construction blocking the path completely (pic at photoset). So I just continued down the wash to E Via Linda Rd. I wonder if soon the Spur will be closed to hikers because eventually there will be no entry/exit.

The last mile on Via Linda back to the 145th trailhead was worst part of my hike because it was getting hot and humid, not nice on sidewalk. But other then that I enjoyed this loop. Next time I would do it clockwise up the canyon per BiFrost's route, that would be easier rather then picking way down through some of the boulder drops.

At the intersection of the Sunrise Trail and the 136th Street Spur Trail there are "warning" signs about the Spur Trail. I scoffed at them, each time I passed by. I was wrong, the 136th Spur is doable, but definitely not your typical McDowell Mountain Super Trail.

Interesting loop...first time on 136th St Spur trail which was really just walking up the wash below the houses. Also, 136th St TH is currently closed for some kind renovation/construction so we had to start from the 145th St equestrian lot and hike to 136th before going up the wash. Then over to Sunrise Peak where we had happy hour sunset before heading down to 145th St.

The Trailhead at the end of 136th Street is closed while the City of Scottsdale builds a water station so we hiked it from top down. Parked at the 128th Street Trailhead and hiked Ringtail :next: right on Sunrise :next: right or down 136th Street :next: on city streets 136, Via Linda, 128th to Ringtail Trailhead. Some boulder climbing along the way, but nothing difficult. With wife, Judy.

I feel like such the "merry housewife" right now as I type this triplog. Woke up this morning and cleaned up the Christmas mess of the house and organized the kids' Santa haul. Then took kids to winter break school so I could get a hike in before we leave for family trip tomorrow.

I'm in the "check it off the list" mode for All trails challenge. There's a REASON I haven't done some of these last few trails on the list. I was determined to get 136th Street to Sunrise knocked off after going up to Sunrise Peak dozens of times by way of 124th, 128th, and 145th.

Unfortunately the 136th Street spur Trailhead just recently  CLOSED  for the next 10-12 months for construction update. So I parked at Ringtail TH on 128th Street and took Ringtail :next: Sunrise Trail then went down 136th Street spur.

I was all into the trail at first and then I entered a wash area with all kinds of warning signs about rocks/boulders. No more trail - just sandy wash alternating with climbing down easy rocky boulder areas - but with huge mansions on either side up above me - felt creepy for some reason.

Went through two tunnels (bridges above part of fancy pants neighborhood) and then got to the blocked off construction site trailhead. I was dreading going back up those stupid rocks. They're not difficult - but it's just not what I had in mind today. I like steep trails but I like switchbacks and trails. I like the clicking and crunching under my feet in a rhythm. Plus I'm 41 years old - my knees don't love sliding and climbing rocks. And getting on an airplane tomorrow - I didn't want to twist my ankle the day before.

So I did something kind of crazy for me - and popped out on 136th Street and just jogged back to my car on 128th St. I looked ridiculous jogging with a backpack on. But I was so glad when I got back to my car!!

Then came home - took a long nap with my cat - got 3 loads of laundry done - dishes - packing suitcases for kids and me - and watching two chick flicks on TV (Little Women and Julie/Julia cooking movie).

Now got to go pick up the kids - no way I could get all this done with them in the house. Have you ever heard the sentiment that trying to clean your house with kids in it is like brushing your teeth while eating Oreos??? :sl:

Great to see/hike with everyone again! Saw my first javelina while hiking (I've seen them while off-roading before, but never while walking).. it popped right out of a drainage pipe in front of us! Pretty cool. Good night hike, as usual.. looking forward to the next one.
