I hadn't hiked in the Superstitions in almost nine months, and though these were all familiar trails, I'd never hiked this specific loop before, and it looked like a solid higher-mileage option. We started from Peralta at ~7AM, and the usual weekend crowds were starting to fill the lot as we packed up. TboneKathy didn't want to go down Cardiac Hill at the end of the loop, so we hiked it clockwise and went up Bluff Springs at the beginning and got that out of the way, with nice sunrise views as we gained elevation. We connected with Terrapin, and I'd never hiked up and over Terrain Pass--great views looking out toward the Goldfields, Black Mesa, Battleship, Malapais, etc. on the way down.

Once we hit Dutchman, we started to get our first looks at the Siphon Fire damage around the Bull Pass/Cavalry intersections. That area was hit hard and was burned to a crisp over to White Rock Spring and a little beyond...sad to see the current state of that once-green area. But the burn scar ended a little farther south, and we detoured off the loop to eat lunch at Charlebois. Two backpackers were bushwhacking their way to the spring and were happy to see us pass and learn there was an easy trail...but then they were right behind us, and we didn't have the lunch spot to ourselves.

We continued to see occasional hikers and backpackers as we continued south on Dutchman, and we saw two people coming down from Miner's Summit as we approached the Whiskey Spring intersection. TboneKathy continued on Dutchman, and I detoured up to the summit for a quick look around. Only one other entry in the register from last February since I was up there about a year ago, so the two who were up there today didn't sign it. The afternoon was mostly cloudy, but the sun broke free briefly while I was at the top.

[ youtube video ]

I headed down and caught up to TBK, and we finished off the loop a little before 5PM. We saw a total of ~10-15 people over the course of the day, but not much unique wildlife--just a cardinal and a tiny garter snake. Overall, a pleasant loop with no real surprises, just a nice day out in the Superstitions. No surprise that it's very dry out there right now--other than the pool at Charlebois, we didn't see any other water all day.

This was a loop that I have done a couple of times before, but we went a different direction. I usually do it clockwise but this time the group leader of Superstition Wilderness Exclusive Hiking and Adventure Meetup took us on a counter-clockwise loop. The advantage of doing it clockwise you do the hard part first and then the easy, but the other way was a good workout as well. It is about 16 miles but there are off shoots of many different hikes. Weaver's Needle comes to mind as well as Miner's Needle. You can see other pictures and descriptions here:

Rolled into Peralta at first light. The air was thick camp fire smoke, many spots being used. I set out for a variation of this loop to include Whiskey Springs down to La Barge creek, strolled down stream a couple of miles and back out on Bluff Springs. Very nice day, a bit of rain at 7:30, light wind, and lots of water and color out there. Hung out along the La Barge creek section and took my time, was in no hurry to leave the lush environment. Saw lots of folks out backpacking.

The main parking lot was full at 8:30 am. Happily, once we were a mile away from the trailhead we didn’t see anyone else until the junction with Dutchmen 104. From the elevation gained on Bluff Springs trail I enjoy looking down into Peralta and seeing the zoo of people.
I had intended to check out Red Tanks or Coffee flats for a few extra miles early on in the day , but I messed up and started the loop from Bluff Springs instead of the Dutchmen trail. In retrospect it is ideal to get cardiac hill out of the way in the beginning and making the return on the Dutchmen trail is much nicer on the knees.

Barks canyon had tons of water from recent rains. The dogs also enjoyed the novelty of water in the desert and got in.

At the trail junction I decided to check on Bluff Springs and take a break. It’s a nice trickle into a bucket. The seating options there are less then accommodating so we moved over to an open flat area with a tree and used fire ring and watched other hikers approaching the trail junction while the dogs ran in circles around us because they don’t want to take breaks and look at us as weak for sitting down at this point lol.

The hike back is very quick, but it got a little warm and the dogs were not as frisky as earlier in the hike. Its nice to hike in the supes and I appreciate this easy loop. We capped a great day with some beers at AZ Wilderness.

Just another easy Superstitions overnight backpack trip to get out of the city for the weekend. There were 12 of us total, there was a large pool of clear water along the Dutchman trail just past the Red Tank trail junction, this is the camp spot we picked for the night. Plenty of firewood available, weather was perfect, not cold at all, i dirtbagged it for the night. On the way back we took Bluff Spring trail to complete the loop

Thought we would get out for a New Years Day hike. We were delighted to see the beautiful snow covered Superstitions and found more snow than we expected as we got closer to the Peralta trail head. There were lots of picture takers and a lot of hikers later in the day. It got a little sloppy, but ice didn't pose any problems where heavier traffic packed in.

Hike with a good friend on a great day. My first hike in the Superstitions. Trail head was crowded, as you'd expect on a weekend. With all the rain lately the trail was bordered by wild flowers most all the way. A lot of usually dry washes were running.

We had seen an arch off Dutchman's trail while hiking to Fifty seven arms ( the huge cactus off Dutchman's trail). We couldn't find a name for the arch, so called it Jim's Arch until another is found. We began at Peralta TH at 8:30 and walked passed the last creek crossing before the junction of Bluff Springs trail and Dutchman's trail. There is a small campsite about 100 feet before the junction. Walk to the north end of the camping area and find cairns leading up the mountainside. Follow the cairns until the trail turns west and reaches a saddle. Now, we turned right and crossed the next couple of ridges before finding the arch. We approached the arch from the northeast side. It was an all fours climb, but we were able to find foot and hand holds to get up the boulders and next to the arch. We climbed down to the southwest, which would be impossible to climb up, but we were able to spread our legs against rock sidewalls to let up slip down the large drop offs. We then returned to our approach route and back to the trailhead.

We then joined our Venture Out hiking club who hiked to Fifty Seven Arms while we went off trail. One of the hikers was having difficulty and was completely exhausted. The group of 25 went on to their vehicles in the parking lot while the remaining 5 (including me) tried to hydrate and refresh her with a wet scarf around her neck. After 30 minutes, she still did not feel capable of walking. A party on horseback came down the trail and offered to take the hiker down on horseback. We were about 3 miles from Peralta TH at that point. We were very grateful the woman leading the group had made such a gracious gesture and certainly appreciate her generosity. I don't know if we could have gotten her to Peralta before darkness as she was unable to go on and didn't seem to be recouping her strength.

It was a long day but really nice weather for a hike after the recent deep freeze. Ran into Tough Boots and John9L at La Barge Spring...nice to meet you guys! The trip was an extension of the Marsh Valley Loop by adding the Bluff Spring Trail over to the Terrapin Trail and connecting with Marsh Valley Loop at the Needles Cutoff Trail.

1st trip
This was supposed to be an easy day with only 22 miles, well groomed trails, and gentle ups and downs in preparation for a longer one next week. I put together a Supes loop which would also get us up by Charlebois again, to find the Master Map of the Supes that we failed to find last week. Joe was in, but asked to add a little 2 mile round trip, an exploratory mission. Not one to pass up a bit of adventure, I said sure, without really looking at it. (Not that that would have changed things)

We started out at the First Water TH at first light, knowing that this week we'd be back before dark. We knew that the "itching with a B and Moaning" would probably be at an all time high on this hike, since, between the two of us, we were running on a total of 3 hours sleep. We passed a few groups of Back Packers on our way to our first stop on top of Black Top Mesa. The views were just gorgeous up there. We spent a little time searching the South end of the Mesa for the petroglyphs. We found a Sun, Snake, a couple of names from the early 1900's, and some pictures we could not Id.

Next, we were off for our little 2 mile detour. The first mistake we made was to get on the Lost Black Top Mesa Trail (Thanks nonot fo the description) instead of getting on the continuation of Bull Pass. This actually was a pretty nice trail that got us to our "Side Trip" quicker. On the way, I saw off in the distance what looked to be part of an old rusty car. As we got closer, it was actually a dead horse. It didn't look like it'd been there all to long :o

So now we start our "Side Trip". The mission, enter the drainage at the North end of Bluff Mountain, climb to the base of the Water Falls, find the ropes, climb said ropes to the top of the Mountain, go over to the top of the falls, take a few pictures, and return. On the Map, about a mile one way and 700' in elevation change. It took us 2 hours and 20 minutes to make it to the falls. :tt:

We ate our lunch here and both decided we did not want to go back down what we'd just come up. so now it's time for a change in hike plans. We ended up hiking to the other end of Bluff Mountain (The opposite direction of our TH) and met back up with the Dutchman at the Ely-Anderson intersection.

From here it was the Dutchman, off past Charlebois (With a stop, finding the Master Map!!), and back to where we'd started our "Side Trip" some 12 miles and almost 9 hours previous at Bluff Pass.

At this point it was time to just get his friggin' hike done. We marched at Zombie warp speed and made it back to the truck just a few minutes short of 9pm.

The hike looked very little like what was planned, but as always with Joe Joe, and adventure.

Thanks Joe for...........

The group of 7 ABCers got a late-ish start from the Peralta trailhead, but it was fun to touch base with some of the other HAZers heading out at the same time (ahem, Tibber, Trishness, desertgirl). It was a wonderful weekend for the hike - fantastic weather, good company and an overall nice hike.

We ran into the 'girls with sticks' group again at the junction with the Red Tanks trail and shared notes on conditions and options. We considered camping at La Barge spring, but one of our mates had accidentally hiked on to Oak Spring and extolled the virtue of that spot, so we moved on. At first glance it looks great for hangers, but it really isn't as good as La Barge in that respect. Trees are just in the wrong places and intervals.

While hanging at camp, ran into another HAZer (shout out to Johnlp). He (almost) whispers to me "are you a HAZer?" My first thought is 'how does he know?'. My second is 'do I want to admit it?'. My third is 'for crying out loud, when did you start talking to yourself so much?'. Always nice to meet more HAZers.

Next morning we continued on north. We tried to find petroglyphs at the junction with the Peter's Mesa trail, but our directions were too vague, so we only found rocks. There was water on and off throughout the canyon - some of the pools more attractive than others. The second day seemed MUCH longer than the first - I suspect because of all of the ups and downs. But it was beautiful, still nice weather and just great trail.

Next time will do this loop the opposite way - get that fun stuff out of the way and go UP the steep stuff rather than down it. Yup, as my buddy Bill says - it's another miserable day in the Sonoran Desert!

Camping at junction of Red Tanks and Whiskey Springs trails. Fast trip out. Feeling good, but realized that I’m starved enough for wilderness tripping that I even enjoy the discomfort, if that makes sense.
Great scenery. Two strange guys (detoured around us so they wouldn’t have to talk) at Whiskey Springs. They went into Upper LeBarge Box, so we turned the other way at the trail confluence.
LaBarge Creek? Is running well.
High temp. today is probably closing 90o. Right now (c. 9 p.m.) it’s 55.
All in all have probably seen 15 people on the trail today, horseback and on foot.
N.B. Turns out to have been almost 20.
Images to remember
Moth with long proboscis, fast-beating wings, long body, looked like a hummingbird.
Mosquitos bad (both nights to about 7:00. Mosquitos bite us, bats flit and flutter through the darkness (twilight) eating mosquitos

3/12/00
About 6 easy miles. Unlike yesterday, we haven’t seen a single other hiker or horsepacker. Morning c. 50o F. Daytime in the sun, closing 90.
Plenty of running water. Stopped at LeBarge Spring to fill up.
We camped near where Denny showed us several years ago, in Needle Canyon. This time we are right near a pool in the slickrock portion.
Gold flecks in the pool. Maxie “panned” for gold for an hour and got a small assortment of flakes.
Explored up Bluff Spring Canyon, where the stream comes from. Found old bottles, cans, and a claim stake.
Great Day.
